Ibike Pro Powermeter

G’day Guys,

Has anyone seen this, used this, know anything about it? Looks like it MIGHT be the answer to a lot of peoples powermeter problems. If anyone has any info on this device I’d love to hear about it.

Check the website out http://www.ibikesports.com/

there is a lot of chatter about it over at the wattage list.

350 bucks…pretty sweet
.

not much info on the website…
I’d like to see numbers re. accuracy rather than ‘as accurate as more expensive competitors’…
it also says pre-purchase but no mention of when it will actually be avail.

G’day Guys,

If it is reasonably accurate it sure would make it nice to move power measurement between different bikes, i.e. mtb, tri, road, touring heck even tandem. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

how does it work?

the website says:

Initial head-to-head comparisons between an iBike Pro and a PowerTap show results within 0.5% of each other.

I want to see the accuracy of the device itself and a comparison not with PT but with SRM pro…

Looks interesting…looks like it takes the HAC4 concept one step further by actually measuring the airspeed in order to more accurately calculate the pseudo-power. I’ve used the HAC4 next to my PT Pro before and the only time it was unusably out of whack was in headwinds over about 10mph or tailwinds of 15+mph… This thing might just be a really useful tool since it removes most of that inaccuracy…or at least makes rides repeatable regardless varying wind conditions.

Of course I’m going to have to give it a try…

How does it connect to the bike, I could find nothing on the web site.

Where is the wattage list?

Looks like it uses the same technology as airplane pitot tubes as well as some type of linear accelerometer. Pitot tubes are notoriously inaccurate at less than 30 kts or so. Personally, I will wait to see some real world testing. If it works, it will be a great deal for the money.

I talked quite extensively to the Ibike people at Interbike. Personally I’m not convinced. Depends on a calibration roll down from 20 mph to work out your power output, and even then to be accurate you must maintain the exact position and bike set up (i.e. tyres, tyre pressure, wheels, etc) for proper comparison during and between rides. So I think overall it will give you ballpark figures for recording ride history, but probably can’t be used to set precise training levels and or to monitor the effect of changes in position.

A BIG drawback (from what I can see when reading the tech info) is it DOESN’t give instantaneous power, only average and max. You can see if you are instantaneously going over or under your average by the arrow indication BUT you don’t know by how much. Other than that, it uses an alogrithm to calculate your power based on wind speed, bike speed, temp, pressure, etc. Not too bad for the price, if you ONLY want to know your average & max watt output.

That would be a GIGANTIC drawback that would make the unit unusable in my opinion.

I agree, sounds like junk. Not a good sign when the website doesn’t tell you the exact method it uses to measure power.
