Ian Thrope Views on his stroke

Check out this interview, and HIS opinion on his stroke. It is interesting that he is used as an icon for illustrating gliding in the front of your stroke several times and that actually appears to be what he wants to get rid of!

(talking about that start from about 3:20)

Edit: I guess I mis-understood front quadrant swimming, as Flanagan pointed out he wants to reduce the pause in his stroke.

do they not have combs in Australia?

LOL

I guess it is the new LA cool boys hair style.

This doesn’t mean he thinks front quadrant swimming is bad. He is just saying he needs to initiate his catch a fraction of a second sooner. The change he is referring to is VERY subtle. Basically he (and many, many middle-distance and distance swimmers) extends his hand in the water as his body is rotating. Instead of immediately initiating the catch once the body is in position to start the catch, many swimmers pause for a 1/20 to 1/10 of a second. This causes the off-balance stroke many people have.

If he had ever actually made this change, 99% of people would not notice the change. He would still have been a poster boy of front quadrant swimming if he made the change he is referring to. He is still going to maximize the length of his stroke, but he is also going to initiate it as soon as he is in the position to do so. From experience, I can tell you this is a very hard change to make. I do the same thing as him. It is a habit which I highly doubt I will ever be able to correct.

Dude, what is that lump over his eye??? Time for a visit to the ol’ doc to get that bad boy checked out.

yeah he has a smaller lesion above his right eye too. Wonder if it is chronic soft tissue scar stuff from his goggles?

okay, I changed the topic, I am sure you know waaaaaaaay better than me. I just found it controversial to some people’s interpretation of how much glide should be in the front of the stroke. so relatively speaking, what do you think is the correct timing of initiating the catch with respec to the other arm ?

Although, as you said the duration might be 1/10th of the second, I guess these guys are taking one full stroke cycle every second, so a 10% difference would be pretty visible.

Fox8… is that the Ocho?

don’t ask me about TV channels, I haven’t watched TV for years.
