I’m torn between do we live in a society where kids don’t have enough to eat, and it’s great that the system is at least trying.
I don’t have kids but I did grow up pretty poor. We generally had something to eat, even if it was a ketchup sandwich. I don’t know how the system works, but don’t people get some assistance?
I’m scratching my head wondering why a school canteen would be open during summer holidays.
I guess the need to feed these poor children is great enough to have the cafe open. That’s where I’m torn too. Don’t people already get assistance? Is it not enough? Spent poorly?
I hate to think of a child going hungry, and I’m glad the system is at least getting them something

There’s still some incentive to feed the kid, because there is social stigma associated with this type of thing (at least there used to be). Even for the poor, it’s all a calculation.

Every kid in my district gets free lunch. 58% of the 25,000 kids are economically disadvantaged, 79% are high need according to the state, so the other 42% of kids gets free lunch.
This money is USDA money not public assistance money. According to the USDA, once 40% of students in a school are economically disadvantaged, the USDA gives free lunch to everyone and no forms are needed.
If you want to know why, you’ll have to exhume Harry Truman. Free lunch has been law since 1946. The Healthy, Hungry-Free Kids Act of 2010 amended the 46 law to allow the USDA to feed whole schools.
The percentage is calculated by taking all “Identified students” including students directly certified through SNAP, TANF; children experiencing homelessness and on the local liaison’s list; Head Start children; migrant youth; runaways; and non-applicants approved by local officials. Foster children who are certified through means other than a household application and students who are certified for free meals based on a letter provided by SNAP to the household are also included. Districts can participate in a variety of ways: by individual school building direct certification rate, groups of schools’ direct certification rate, or by an entire district’s direct certification rate.
Starving a kid is not going to change a parents behavior.

When I was a kid I had a card that gave me free lunch. All I had to do was show it to the lunch lady. I remember kids going through the lunch line then giving their card to the friend so they could go through too.
I understand the system is different now and kids can’t do that, but as far as I was concerned back then, it got everybody lunch.
I’m not sure why lunch isn’t free anyway? We spend so much money on stupid things that you wold think making sure a child got something to eat would be first on the agenda.
I know, I’m a dreamer and don’t really understand how the system works. I do know that the system we have in place isn’t working. Children being turned away because they don’t have money in the lunch account? Seriously?

Actually almost all the schools in my area have the same open for lunch during the summer program.
I just wasn’t expecting to see it on a placard in front of the school.

Our district does this. I think there are 5 parks they do it at. They have high schoolers run games and the library reading program has books. We have a very diverse community socioeconomic wise. I’m glad kids have options. This year they even have free meals for adults accompanying the kids- in the past it was $3 for adults.
One of the number one indicators of school success is parental involvement and this is partially an outreach program. A way to partner with families and get books and activities to kids who might not have as many resources at home and be more at risk for the summer slide.
We also have a number of summer school programs (that include free breakfast and lunch) for those who need academic scaffolding- but this leaves out kids who are doing well.
Anyone can attend.
Summer is shown to be a huge divider between academic growth for those who can afford experiences like camp and those who can’t. I think it’s a great way to try and bridge this gap and have parents see the district as a partner- as well as giving kids a positive view of how the schools can be there to support them. Employing high schoolers isn’t a bad thing to do either.
