I was in Subway the other day and an old guy whipped out his

… keychain tape measure to measure his sandwich and loudly complained that it was “closer to 5 than 6”.

The expression on the employee’s face was awesome. “Uh sir, it’s uhh, the bread uhhh,”. I didn’t know what to think.

As soon as he left we all had a good laugh and amde a bunch of jokes about my sandwich being too small, not warm enough, too much lettuce, etc and that the old guy had customer service on speed dial.

It was good for a laugh, but really, when did folks start taking this stuff so seriously. The guy bought a 6-inch sandwich and nothing else. Of course he told the employee he wanted “everything on it”, but then started yelling when the employee started to add peppers, oil, vinegar, etc.

Still I thought it was pretty funny and LR worthy. I have another Subway story, but right now I have ice-cream to eat. Peace.

or the people that say “I’ll take everything but” and list 8 of the possible 10 items they don’t want on it
.

That’s why I don’t allow any tape measures in the bedroom.

Another subway story:

I am in line and this woman in front of me, real obnoxious, tells the woman making the sandwhich to put another pair of those plastic gloves on
after she makes her husbands sandwhich because she doesn’t want one bit of pepper juice on her sandwhich.
some people just make me shake my head.

Trip,

That is hilarious. I am becoming more and more convinced that there are some people who need to find reasons to be miserable. I’ll give you a recent example from my life. Last weekend, my union (IAFF) had our big charity fundraiser for MDA called the Fill the Boot Campaign. In our community we set up some traffic cones outside of our fire station and stood out in the road. We made sure that we were not out there during rush hour, but we were out there for about 4 hours during the middle of the day. We had made a big sign that said “Voluntary Toll” to help attract attention. By and large the response was excellent from people. Still there were some people who reacted like this one guy. Please bear in mind that at the time he was THE ONLY guy on the road.

Crotchity Old Man: “I don’t know what cahrity you guys are collecting for.”

Me: “Sir, we are accepting donations for MDA. You know, Jerry’s Kids?”

C.O.M.: “I don’t know what makes you think you have the right to be here blocking traffic like this.”

Me (looking around to see there is no other car around): “Sir, it is voluntary, you can drive right by if you would like.”

C.O.M.: “I know it is voluntary, but what gives you the right to block traffic like this? Don’t you know this a public road?”

Me: “Sir, we are collecting donations for the MDA. We have a permit from the Township Board and permission from the police to ‘coke bottle’ the lanes from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. I understand that this can cause a small traffic backup, but most people will only be inconvenienced for less than a minute. I apologize to you that you have been held up this long, but please, drive right by and pretend that we are not even here if that will make you feel better.”

C.O.M.: “This just isn’t right. I mean, this is a public road, and you are blocking traffic. I am going to complain to the Township Supervisor. I just don’t know why you think you have the right to be here.”

Me (as I see now that there is a line of cars developing): “Thank you for your concern, sir. Again, I apologize for your inconvenience. Could you please drive by and give these other nice people a chance to donate money?”

Finally the guy drove off. Weird.

Bernie

I used to work in a bakery/sandwich shop in college. We didn’t start making sandwiches until 10 a.m., but the bakery opened at 7 for coffee/pastries/etc. One time this old duffer came in at 7:15 and walked right up and ordered a BLT. We politely explained that we couldn’t make it because the sandwich prep was in process, and none of the ingredients were ready. Really, they weren’t. The bacon wasn’t cooked, bread not sliced, etc. He sat in the corner for the remaining 2 hrs. 45 min. until we began making sandwiches and then demanded a free one. This, after the manager GAVE him a cup of coffee (bottomless) and a free muffin for his trouble. Apparently he drove a long way to get there. They gave him the free sandwich.

The best part is that he came back and pulled this stunt about three more times with different managers before we figured out the trick and pulled the plug on it.
