That I’m almost ready with food prep and we have successfully avoided the parasitic bad guests family that lives by us who is related to my wife by aggressively insisting we have no dinner plans.
903 AM… ding dong
My wife is in a robe so scampers upstairs.
Guess who I opened the door to…
My wife is pissed and I’m white hot when they all (including a sick kid) come waltzing in hiya happy fourth. Oh whatya doing? Is that for a BBQ? I pointedly didn’t invite them to join. Letting my wife sort this out since her family.

No, it’s not too early to start drinking. In fact, I would argue it might be too late.
At what point did this holiday stop being fun for us(as in you and me), I’m thinking right around the time I had kids, and all of our now friends have them too? It is still morning here, but I have a hellish day ahead of me of carnivals, crap food, lines, and pretending to have fun. Then staying up way to late to watch fireworks I give two shits about…
Why did you respond to the door bell and open the door?
Because they knew we were home…
That is the prefect time for your wife to do her best “When Harry met Sally†impression while you bang rhythmically on a wall.
Yep. Just because “they know you are home” doesn’t mean you can hear the doorbell or you can answer the door. Admit it, you f$cked up.
I had a great day on Canada Day here. kids went on their first boat ride (friends “new” 18; Boston Whaler with a 150hp Honda on the back. It’s hilariously large for the boat). They had a blast.
I packed up the tent trailer and got it all hooked up, then found 2 ticks on me. One in may hair, one on my leg. The ticks are bad this year.
Then dropped the family off at the kids foster family’s BBQ (we’ve maintained a good relationship with them), took the camper home then came back and gorged myself on burgers, 7 layer dip with tortillas, and potato salad. Kids fell asleep about 3 minutes after I put them in bed that night.

State “We have things to get ready for. So we’ll see y’all in a couple weeks.”. Then walk to the door and hold it for them.
I have done that before to people not invited to a function.
Now my wife is less direct and less confrontational. She prefers to “need to go to the grocery store” and will state, “we were just leaving to town to get some groceries” as her exit excuse. Besides, there is always some “oh shit, I forgot the ____” that we need. It seems to work.
