I think we all owe Greg Lemond a big apology

Lemond is too inconsistent. He didn’t mind doping until the oxygen carrying products that took his advantage showed up.
He didn’t call out Fignon, Hinault, or even Delgado. I am not sure why he never called out Indurain. Maybe because big Mig wasn’t American and/or he wasn’t the dick that Lance is.
Gaining 20lbs in the winter from cross country skiing? Really? Maybe from not training enough. Or some combination of not training enough, steroids, and cross country skiing.
I love Greg for 1989. So huge. But there were plenty of big time dopers before Lance. Lance played the game that was already in progress.

I can’t say I’ve followed the ST talk on Lemond, but it seems to me that many in this thread are giving him a ‘pass’ on doping. As if they’re assuming he was clean. That seems unrealistic, to me, since I sincerely doubt many of today’s cyclists are clean, let alone those in the 80’s. Wasn’t it Bernard Hinault, Lemond’s teammate, who scoffed at the idea of riding clean? I wonder who their team doctor was.

Why does LA get hammered for doping, but Lemond is now the new shining light of American cycling? Maybe I missed it: Has Lemond admitted to doping?

Or are we all assuming he was doping, but it’s OK in his circumstance?

Again, I’m not claiming to know exactly what Lemond has, or hasn’t admitted (or injected). Just curious.
