I think I am cursed...Updated, more curses!

Two years ago, I got a stomach bug 10 days prior to Great Floridian. Result - DNF, as I wasn’t fully recovered.

This year, two weeks before GFT, I broke my index finger, thanks to my stupidity. I split it down the middle to the base of the nail, by inserting it into my hedge trimmer.

Now, three days prior to the race, I think I’m coming down with a cold.

Very frustrating and disappointing.

Anyone else have some bad luck that hits them like this?

I trained very hard for a race 2 years ago. The week of the race I was went for a run one morning and felt like I was working with 1 lung. After visiting the doctor, it turned out I had some type of viral bronchial thing going on. Long story short, I was sucking on an inhaler before the gun went off. I ended up finishing the race but my result definitely suffered.

I feel for you. It definitely sucks to get sick before such a big day. We all train so hard for a couple days a year.

I was supposed to leave for track worlds in Portugal yesterday but instead I’m still in SF. Sick for two weeks in late September/October put me out of training for too long and I bailed on the trip and am not yet back on the bike full time.

Hope your finger heals up quick and your cold goes away soon.

Girl, that sucks about the track world championships, I’m sorry to hear that. It should get easier next year for you to qualify though, since you know what it takes to make it happen.

Feel better!

I was training for provincial cross-country championships in november and while out for a long run I stepped on a root and sprained my ankle. It was going to be my only real race this fall after training hard for the last 3 months. o well i get to start my swim focus a month early.

Last year I trained for Monaco 70.3 and injured my groin while training. I got it back in shape with 3 weeks to the race only to have kidney stones 2 weeks before the race. I had surgery to remove the stones and with 1 week to the race I decided I’d do it even though I’d missed several weeks of training. My flight out of Toronto got delayed by an hour and a half which made me miss my connection in Frankfurt and I missed registration in Monaco. Needless to say I didn’t race. This year I’ve been training for Miami 70.3 at the end of this month. Well I’ve just spent the last 10 days recovering from bronchial pneumonia and I have a week of whatever kind of training I can get in before the race. Short of my bike getting lost by the airline I’ll be doing this race come hell or high water.

2009 I was on my last run prior to GCT. I was 100 feet from my front door when I got hit by a car. I attempted GCT and DNF’ed on the bike when my left arm went completely numb. I spent the next 2 days locked in the hotel with a headache cause by the concussion.

I had surgery this May to repair the damage. (I couldn’t afford the surgery earlier do to high deductible insurance.) Anyway, I have been getting ready for Miamiman the second week of November and I just tore the weakened bicep muscles on the injured arm. Doc says race is questionable at best. I feel good after the cortisone shot, but who knows if it will hold out.

I am Dr. Crash and I earn the nickname every two or three months.

This was my first tri season. Someone got too close to me and I crashed during my first race. Took me out for three weeks. Then I fractured my tibia and had to walk 8-9 miles of the 1/2 IM run. Then I injured it again, right before IMC. Right now, I have a bum shoulder, a twisted ankle, and a finger in a splint for 3 months after badly cutting a tendon. So much for cyclocross racing, or doing pretty much anything except cooking (anti-jinx here: cooking can be dangerous :o). And ski season is coming! Is losing a job bad luck too? I have that too.

I think the only time this year that I had good luck was after my 5 year old car’s engine died 3 weeks before IMC (oh yes: good luck there) and I got a new car and did NOT have my DRCRASH license plate on: I had a great race at IMC. I swear I cut my finger off the day after I got my registration and put my license plates back on!

Good thing I am resilient… But sometimes it feels quite trying…

Trained my ass off for IMLP this year and came down with a Migraine the night before the race. Spent the whole night barfing and up until 5 am. Tried to get dressed, basically passed out in a chair, slept until 5 or 6 that evening then woke up feeling fine.

I’ve had migraines all my life but last 4 years or so have only had about 1-2 a year, tops. That was the first one I’d had since around October of 2009.

By the time I add in the trip and room in 2009 to volunteer, and the trip and room in 2010 to go up there I figure I spent well over a grand to go throw up in a strange bathroom all night.

It’s good to know that it’s not just me. Kind of makes me feel better. Thanks to all of you.

Taper madness… you’ll be fine

I have lost two whole summers of racing…ie the last two summers to a broken collarbone and really bad knee tendinitis. At least I am changing joints, right?

If it’s just a cold, you’ll probably be fine–not happy, but fine. I wish you all the best and hope it’s just taper sniffles!

Paid up (in one case with hotel reservations) and a couple months short of THREE iron races, had to bail for one reason or another.

I think I’m just going to stop signing up for shit.

It never ends for me, it seems.

This year, I woke up and had diarrhea just before I left the hotel. I thought it was just nerves. Felt awesome through the swim, and the first 30 miles of the bike. then more diarrhea at M38, 60 and 75. Pulled the plug right there, as I was scared shitless (almost literally) to continue knowing what was happening inside my body.

Rather depressing.

Couple years ago I was in a car wreck two days before I was to fly down to GFT…note…do not fly with broken ribs.

Had a great time helping on the course however.

Felt awesome through the swim

Well, that’s good

I don’t know, by reading all these answers maybe you’ll see that it happens to everyone.
last year, coming back for my first race after more than one year off due to injury, IM Nice, I got a hip stress fracture during my last long run three weeks before the race (I actually heard and felt it snap) the injury was totally unrelated to my earlier injury.
this october, one week before challenge barcelona-maresme I got a sore throat, tonsillitis and high fever.took a week to recover and another week to regain most of my strength. not a chance to race.
next season, then. stay positive.it helps.

Yes, I had a good coach!

And Marcus, like I said above, (unfortunately) it helps me knowing that crap happens to people. When my dad was diagnosed with cancer, my sisters kept saying “why you?” My dad always said, “why not me?” (obviously that’s more serious)

But it just happens to people…that’s life.

I think you were supposed to be NOT thinking about tri for the rest of the day, too
.

Are you kidding…I’m already thinking about 2011 races I want to do!
