I think I am allergic to swimming

Over the past month I have been dealing with what seems to be an allergic reaction after each swim workout. Sneezing, congestion, and running nose set in approximately 3-4 hours after getting out of the water on each swim. I have been swimming exclusively at the same pool for 5 years and they claim they have not made any changes to their chemicals. Thought for sure it was the pool, but had the same issues after an open water swim last week. Any thoughts. Benadryl seems to clear it up right away, which is great with the exception of the nap I need after taking it.

I have the same thing. Instead of benadryl, try claritine.

Hi,

FYI, I had the same problem after pool swims. Started using a nose clip and now never have any problems.

chad.

Exact same thing. Only thing I found to work was Rhinocort (I think that’s spelled correctly), then switched to Fluticisone. Nasal mist stuff. It works flawlessly if I sniff every day, but since I’m not too keen about doing that every day for the next 40 years, I kind of do it every other day or so.

Funny thing (to me, at least) was I had the same reaction whether I swam at the 50% water/50% chlorine YMCA pool or in Lake Huron. Took years to find something that worked.

Good luck.

I have that problem at 24 hour fitness in memphis they use saline system(salt water) but occasionally they get it all messed up but every time I swim my sinus and nose are running and Im’ blowing some very big clear though snot rockets and head gets congested… I’m thinking mostly caused during my crude flip turns where I almost always get water in my nose just blow it out and swim.
Been wanting to try a reguarly chlorinated pool to see if I have the same problem.

+1 on the nose clip. They take some getting used to, but since I started using one - no problems whatsoever.
Cheers,
Darren

I have the same problem. My only real solution is to keep the swimming down to about 3 times per week, max. If I try to go every day, by the second or third week of that, I’m in full blown reaction, to the point where I can’t breathe through my nose at all…no air whatsoever, to the point its tough to eat because you’re trying to breathe through your mouth as you chew. The nose clip helps if you can get used to it.

Spot

  • 2 on the nose clip, been using one of over a year and problem has disappeared.

Ah the joys of a chlorine allergy. Lots of swimmers have it including Ian Thorpe I believe.

Nose clip works or if you hate that try taking an antihistamine 15 minutes before you swim. I don’t really like a clip so I go the with an antihistamine. Some work better than others so don’t give up if the first one doesn’t work. I don’t particularly like claritine for example but others swear by it.

I get this occasionally - from both pool swimming and open water swimming.

For me I think swimming opens my sinuses up and makes it more suceptible to allergens in the air. Bad allergy/air day and bam - I’m messed up for a while.

If I remember to take a claritine before hand seems to be better. Taking it after the fact doesn’t seem to do much.
