Still a pretty big thing. 300,000 or so in attendance, great race. I remember the days when they wouldn’t show it live for licensing or other reasons. Always had to wait until Monday to watch on TV.

Yeah, I remember growing up the 70s, the race would be broadcast on Monday, not live like it is today. The sportscasters on Sunday would tell folks to look away if they planned on watching to avoid spoilers. My dad and I would always watch the race.
The idiots put part of qualifying and practice that used be on ABC pay per view, and then to make it worse only in the U.S. so even if I wanted to pay, it wasn’t available in Canada! Great race though with a great finish, passing for the lead, back and forth with Pagenaud making it stick and taking the win. The cars look good again, (freakin junk IRL) they are turbo charged again and sound great, they are fast again with straightaway speeds of 250 mph, still is one of the greatest spectacles in motor sports.
NBC coverage of the race was awful. There was more commercial time than race coverage. ABC did it for years much better. Could not hear the commentators over the sound of the cars.

But like boxing, it’s not what it was. We used to know the names of most of the drivers, and then you’d have the Andy Granatellis and a few other personalities. They’d be on the cover of magazines like Newsweek. And don’t forget Al Unser shelling for Johnny Lightning cars (better than Hot Wheels).

I did watch Monaco. Was a bit of a snoozer with Hamilton winning but at least it wasn’t a Mercedes 1-2.

It should have been a Mercedes 1-2. The unsafe release of Verstappen lost Botas 2 places.
It was kind of sad to hear Hamilton whining about his tires for the last part of the race. He should have know this was a possible outcome. Limp a long in the lead on lousy tires, but no one could go fast enough to actually pass him. Did he never watch last years race?

Geez, really, I don’t understand the bitching. That was a helluva finish. And Rossi was lit, he was sticking his nose in places he had a couple inches at most between his tires and the pit wall and the guy he was trying to pass.

I live in Indy and they still black it out locally. Thanks to the internet, we can usually find a live feed but I like listening on the radio (kind of tradition if I don’t want to go to the race).
Around here it’s part tradition and part race fans. It’s one hell of a party too since you are allowed to bring coolers in.

Verstappen would’ve had to pass AND make up 5 seconds to negate the penalty to maintain a win. Knowing he wasn’t gonna get that done, unless Hamilton totally lost his tire/tyre, he was just trying to push Lewis hard enough to get a :05 gap and keep a legit 2nd

Making up the 5 seconds would have taken only 1.5 laps, maybe less. Hamilton was consistently lapping at almost 1:17.8. Verstappen, even with traffic, would have been high 1:13 or low 1:14 at that end of the race with low fuel.
I was more suprised that Vettel did not hold up Bottas more and cause Bottas to miss 3rd place and cost Mercedes some constructor points.
The whole, driver bitching over the radio, is really overplayed. The drivers need to be informing the pit wall constantly of what is going on, the good and especially the bad. So complaints over the radio are part of their job.
It was a huge thing when I was a kid, the Andretti’s were household names. It was like the Wizard of Oz, a must see event once a year on a particular day. Only other thing I can remember like that was the super bowl and World Series.
Maybe it has fallen off because you have to qualify for it, and cannot buy your way onto the start line, you know, like those ironman and Everest peeps…(-;
I don’t follow the sport, but a friend of a friend is a “driver” he isn’t really on the circuit at all, yet somehow earned a spot through qualifying in '17 and '18. Maybe I don’t understand the qualifications for qualifying, but to me it seemed strange that a guy who is barely even driving full time (he mostly coaches youths) somehow is in The Masters of the sport two years in a row. Certainly removed any mystique it may have had for me.
