<<Any suggestions on common household products to use as a lube? >>
I’d love to hear an answer to this too. Everyone raves about the Assos cream, but it’s so expensive. Are there any cheaper alternatives that people recommend? It would seem that diaper cream or something like it would be readily available for a cheaper cost. Anyone out there have experiences with product other than “cycling” directed chamois products? What about A&D or other lotions? Peanut Butter perhaps? Ok, maybe not… but there’s gotta be something that’ll work.

You might think diaper cream, etc would be cheaper - but it ain’t. At least not by a lot.
A tub of Aquaphor (killer diaper lube, my daughter should try to approach them for a sponsorship deal) that is the same size as a tub of Assos, goes for like $17. I’d rather spend the extra $3 or whatever for the minty-fresh, purpose-specific Assos stuff.
Likewise, stuff like Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, and other diaper-rash products are very spendy, considering the small quantity you are getting for yer $.
In a pinch, ya could use BodyGlide, I’ve used that w/ some success in races. But, (pun intended) that stuff ain’t cheap neither.
For rides under say 2 hrs, I don’t even bother w/ lube. Builds character.
I’ve been waiting for someone to be in such a bind, so they will try out my theory. I use pam cooking spray with my wetsuit (particularly around the neck). I find it is way better in preventing than bodyglide, and lasts longer.
Anyway, back to the matter at hand. It has been rattling around in the back of my head that pam might be a GREAT chamois lube. But, when the butt’r is sitting right there, i havn’t brought myself to try it. I think my biggest concern is what will happen when i try to wash the shorts afterward. The cooking oil might be TOO long lasting. I dont need all my cycling outfits to have an oily sheen. I’m also a little scared (although a little intrigued) by the initial cold spray.
So, I need you to give this a shot and let us know how it works. This could be a major breakthrough in taint lubrication.
I’ve done a little searching on here and google to see if anyone had said they’d used pam, but I havnt come across anything. I suspect someone has, and not told anyone. If this is you, speak up. It was either so bad that you were hospitalized and didn’t want to tell anyone, or so good that you selfishly are keeping it to yourself (in which case you are a bastard).
If you are concerned about something being too long-lasting, then don’t, under any circumstances, try Crisco.
Many years ago, I did some HiTec adventure races, and they had the “slippery mountain”, which was a big plywood ramp covered in Crisco and vegetable oil. Made for an interesting “special test” for sure.
Both of my teammates (my wife, and a buddy of ours) threw out the clothes they wore, as they could not get the Crisco residue (and odor) out of them. I still wear that same bike jersey (it was a brand new Pearl Izumi, NFW was I throwing that sucker out) and it still has the slightest whiff or Crisco on it to this day. ;-p
I think that if you lubed up w/Crisco, you might never have to lube again.
