I-Pod / Penalty Question

Okay, I really don’t want get into the whole I-Pod controversy…is it safe to run with one, will I get hit hit by a bus/train whatever. My question is…I really want to run with my I-Pod during the marathon part of an upcoming IM, there is a time penalty associated with a violation. I am willing to accept the penalty, but could I be DQ’d if three different officials see me? I have looked at results from many different Triathlons and have yet to see any penalties for wearing headphones/I-Pods, even though I have seen many people running with them.

Automatic DQ, one strike and you’re out.

Why would you “really” want to do something that is against the rules?

P. 3 of the rules sheet.

I’m paraphrasing… Three strikes and you’re out. I doesn’t matter if it’s drafting, littering and then an IPOD or just an IPOD three times. They mark your number. Don’t do it dude.

Your just asking for it with this one. I’ve seen plenty of people with them on at IM’s. I really don’t know what to tell you? This might could get interesting though…

I saw zero iPod’s at IMAZ and IMCDA. Jimmy Riccitello said at the pre-race meeting that it was an automatic DQ.

Thats fine with me if its an automatic DQ. Rules are rules. I saw a ton at IMFL last year, a few at Oceanside 70.3, and just a handful at disney this year. So, I guess they are really enforcing the rule.

Where are these triathlons? I have never seen anyone using a iPod during a race. At a marathon, thats a different story, seen plenty there.

Why would you risk getting DQ for something that you have trained and prepared a year for?

People amaze me
.

that’s like asking if it’s ok to draft until you get caught once or twice because you’re willing to take the penalty. it’s a rule and by enterring the race you have agreed to follow the rules. beyond that, i’ve heard riccitello say at pre race meetings that any ipods that he sees will be confiscated on the spot and don’t expect it back.

Personally I think anyone using an Ipod during a race is a wimp. Suck it up and run tough like everyone else. Do your long runs without it if you don’t think you can handle going without it during the race.

You also miss out on a lot of the IM experience by not listening to everything going on around you - especially the cheers from total strangers!

Spot on!

There are often penalties for wearing headphones in triathlons, and they are starting to enforce the no headphone rule much more often in marathons and other running races in general as well.

Good first post, by the way. I look forward to your future trolls.

I like the theme Paulo has set. Here is my version:

Okay, I really don’t want get into the whole dumbass controversy…is it safe to be one, if I get hit for being a troll whatever. My question is…I really want to be a dumbass during my upcoming IM, there is a time penalty associated with a violation. I am willing to accept the penalty, but could I be DQ’d if three different officials see me? I have looked at results from many different Triathlons and have yet to see any penalties for being a dumbass, even though I have talked to many people who say I am one.

go with the new shuffle clipped to the back of your hat with the wires routed behind your ears, and you should be fine.

Ipods are dangerous, because you can’t hear what’s going on. That makes you a dumbass, a jerk and a hazard to others. If you absolutley can’t live without your tunes, then you have two options.

  • Small speakers in your jersey pockets
  • Oakley Thumps

If I’m running or riding next to you (at a race) and see that you’re wearing headphones, I’ll shoulder you into the nearest ditch. If I see you riding with them on the roads where I ride, I’ll rip them off your head.

I’d DQ your ass on the spot.

Ok admitted I’m not a huge music listener anymore, but I don’t get the whole “can’t run without my tunes” thing. My running time is a chance to let my mind free if it’s an easy run and to focus on the task at hand if it’s a hard run. I have worked through more problems on my lunch runs than I ever did at my desk. Have we become so connected we can’t perform a simple task without something external to stimulate our minds? sheesh

Okay, that settles it…I’m wearing the I-Pod. I’ll probably be doing a little drafting and I’m definitely going to litter! I may actually even abandon some equipment for good measure. Oh yeah and I’ll still beat you all by 1-2 hours!

Shoulder me off the road? Please…you talk awfully big sitting behind a computer monitor, Mr Hairstylist!
