I missed my "last" long ride - am I hosed?

2 weeks out from first HIM. Bike is my weakest link. 3-4 50 mile rides and a couple of 70 mile rides under my belt. But due to some family stuff at home I had to cut my “last” long ride (as my coach calls it) from 3-4 hours down to just 2 hours.

In theory, will this make any difference at all in the HIM? Should I try to “make up” this 3-4 hour ride in the next couple of days?

Serious and sincere responses are appreciated.

HTFU and do the ride right now

You could do a long ride the week before. Its really not that big of a deal. Tim

You will be OK.

You should be okay, but will hurt more and go slower.

since you have a coach, shouldn’t you be asking him/her?

It will not make any difference, you will be just fine. No single workout determines your performance.

If you’re trying to win the thing, go get the miles. If you’re a normal age grouper, out for the experience while trying to juggle a ton of other daily hassles, you’re fine. maybe you’ll finish 148th instead of 146th.

just lay in bed tonight and visualize the other two hours. it’s just as good.

You’ve probably done more long rides than many (maybe even most) first timers at HIM. Forget about the one you cut in half. Better to arrive at the race fresh rather than pooped from cramming in an unplanned long ride during the last two weeks.

sounds like you’ve got a good amount of rides already. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yes. Sorry but yes, you are completely screwed. You might as well just go do the race for fun now.

Actually, missing that ride is going to help more than hurt. Just try to fit in some shorter (1 hr) sessions at a little higher speed. Sounds like you have enough base to work with and, it’s a 1/2 IM. Keep up with your frequency but increase the intensity of the workouts. IMO - There is no reason to do a 4 hour ride now to prep for a 1/2.

Best of luck. Enjoy the race.

Did my first HIM last year at Timberman (not super hard course but not easy) and went 2:37 with no rides longer than 60 miles. You have plenty of decent length rides.

Thanks. Just went back through my logs and realized that I do have plenty of base/build and need to rest up more than anything and get in some threshold + race pace quality work this week and then take it easy before the race.

Thanks.

You will be absolutely fine. Don’t stress over it. Enjoy a nice taper before the HIM and you will have a great race.

You are utterly and completely fucked. Might as well eat a half gallon of Ben and Jerry’s now too, go for the full effect.

Oh, and I think you need to change your screen name.

I am being totally sincere and serious.

We NY’ers have a quant saying, that pertains perfectly to your situation.

Fuggedaboutit.

One workout isn’t gonna make any difference. Yer probably better off, the whole “better to be 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained” dealio.

You’re basically asking us if your entire race is dependent upon that one specific workout over the many hundreds of other workouts that you’ve done leading up to this race. Think about that for a minute and get back to me on that.

Hope your not paying that coach to much since you could not ask them.

But since you asked there is only one way you are not totally screwed and that is if you ride a bike supplied by Bikesdirect, if not ohhh are you in trouble.

You’ve done a hell of a lot more long rides than I did before my first half! But seriously, you’ve gone over the distance 2x, assuming you’ve done sufficient long runs and short bricks post those bikes, that is enough. I would think that most would agree that 3-2 weeks out you’d be focusing on intensity and speed anyways, with the last week as taper.

Thanks. Just went back through my logs and realized that I do have plenty of base/build and need to rest up more than anything …

Wise grasshopper.
