There is a statue of limitiations for blaming Clinton on all the nations problems, and I think that it ended sometime before Bush’s first term ended. So how about if the administration steps up like a man and takes responsibility for the state of this country? He’s had 5 years to get the job done.

Ignoring the fact that Bush could and should have done more to prevent the terrorist attacks on 9/11 the presidents tax cuts were and still are the most signifigant cause of the deficit, real or projected.

First of all: I never said it was Bush’s fault. I did say, and maintain, that he did not do as much as he could have or should have to prevent the attacks. Read O’Niell’s “Price of Loyalty” and the 9/11 commisson report. There were plenty of dots to connect and he blatently disregarded them. If Gore was sitting in the White house I would say the same thing.
Second of all: The economy was stimulated, but mainly by pumping money into the pockets of the wealthy (wages for the middle class have remained stagnent - unlike during Clinton’s administration) and at the cost of huge deficits.

I made a commitment to myself when this thing happened to give the President the benefit of the doubt as long as I could. I promised not to get on his case, to blame him, to be a good American and rally round the leader at this time of national need. I rallied and I waited and I waited and I waited.

He leaves his ranch, makes a short detour en route to DC and flies over the area so he can look out the window of Air Force One like some sort of aerial rubber necker.

In fiscal year 2006, the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is bracing for a record $71.2 million reduction in federal funding.
It would be the largest single-year funding loss ever for the New Orleans district, Corps officials said.
I’ve been here over 30 years and I’ve never seen this level of reduction, said Al Naomi, project manager for the New Orleans district. I think part of the problem is it’s not so much the reduction, it’s the drastic reduction in one fiscal year. It’s the immediacy of the reduction that I think is the hardest thing to adapt to.
There is an economic ripple effect, too. The cuts mean major hurricane and flood protection projects will not be awarded to local engineering firms. Also, a study to determine ways to protect the region from a Category 5 hurricane has been shelved for now.
Money is so tight the New Orleans district, which employs 1,300 people, instituted a hiring freeze last month on all positions. The freeze is the first of its kind in about 10 years, said Marcia Demma, chief of the Corps’ Programs Management Branch.
Stephen Jeselink, interim commander of the New Orleans Corps district, told employees in an internal e-mail dated May 25 that the district is experiencing financial challenges. Execution of our available funds must be dealt with through prudent districtwide management decisions. In addition to a hiring freeze, Jeselink canceled the annual Corps picnic held every June.
Congress is setting the Corps budget.
The House of Representatives wants to cut the New Orleans district budget 21 percent to $272.4 million in 2006, down from $343.5 million in 2005. The House figure is about $20 million lower than the president’s suggested $290.7 million budget.
It’s now up to the Senate. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-New Orleans, is making no promises.
It’s going to be very tough, Landrieu said. The House was not able to add back this money … but hopefully we can rally in the Senate and get some of this money back.
Landrieu said the Bush administration is not making Corps of Engineers funding a priority.
I think it’s extremely shortsighted, Landrieu said. When the Corps of Engineers’ budget is cut, Louisiana bleeds. These projects are literally life-and-death projects to the people of south Louisiana and they are (of) vital economic interest to the entire nation.
The Corps’ budget could still be beefed up, as it is every year, through congressional additions. Last year, Congress added $20 million to the overall budget of the New Orleans district but a similar increase this year would still leave a $50 million shortfall.
One of the hardest-hit areas of the New Orleans district’s budget is the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, which was created after the May 1995 flood to improve drainage in Jefferson, Orleans and St. Tammany parishes. SELA’s budget is being drained from $36.5 million awarded in 2005 to $10.4 million suggested for 2006 by the House of Representatives and the president.
The project manager said there would be no contracts awarded with this $10.4 million, Demma said.
The construction portion of the Corps’ budget would suffer if Congress doesn’t add money. In 2005, the district received $94.3 million in federal dollars dedicated to construction. In 2006, the proposal is for $56 million.
It would be critical to this city if we had a $50 million construction budget compared with the past years, Demma said. It would be horrible for the city, it would be horrible for contractors and for flood protection if this were the final number compared to recent years and what the city needs.
Construction generally has been on the decline for several years and focus has been on other projects in the Corps.
The district has identified $35 million in projects to build and improve levees, floodwalls and pumping stations in St. Bernard, Orleans, Jefferson and St. Charles parishes. Those projects are included in a Corps line item called Lake Pontchartrain, where funding is scheduled to be cut from $5.7 million this year to $2.9 million in 2006. Naomi said it’s enough to pay salaries but little else.
We’ll do some design work. We’ll design the contracts and get them ready to go if we get the money. But we don’t have the money to put the work in the field, and that’s the problem, Naomi said.
The Appropriations Committee in Congress will ultimately decide how much the New Orleans district will receive, he said.
Obviously, the decisions are being made up there that are not beneficial to the state, in my opinion, Naomi said. Let’s put it this way: When (former Rep.) Bob Livingston (R-Metairie) was chairman of the Appropriations Committee, we didn’t have a monetary problem. Our problem was how do we spend all the money we were getting.
So, if they did get that money…the project certainy would not have been done by now, and maybe not even started…great, you found a way to put out last weeks fire…

There is no way, and no real reason that the Govt should or can plan for every instance of every disaster of every kind in every place…just not possible. Would we not be better spending that money for more eathquake protection in Cali? How about tornado protection in Nebraska? Snow and Ice storms in Buffalo?

I’m not happy about what is going on in Iraq, but I also don’t particularly agree with Cindy Sheehan. Thing is, there’s no draft. Everyone in our military signed on, in doing so they took the risk of being put in harms way. Reminds me of Superchicken “you knew it was a dangerous job when you took it, Fred”.
I’m sick of the republican agenda and their catering to the religious right. Separation of Church and State is not a suggestion. If people want prayer in school, they should send their kids to parochial school. That “under God” line in the Pledge, guess what, it wasn’t part of the original pledge, it should be removed. Gays should be allowed to marry. Marriage is not about procreation for everyone. Plenty of hetero couples choose to be together solely because they want to spend their lives together. At leasts the homos aren’t out there producing children they won’t/can’t take care of and over burdening the welfare system. Afganistan’s dead civilians & Tora Bora: Bush’s ineptness, should’ve invaded Saudi Arabia instead. Geraldo could find UBL faster than the military/CIA. Gitmo. The “failed” Iraq invasion, the dead Iraqi civilians (killed by who, huh?), and the patriotic, “freedom fighter”, insurgents: all Bush’s fault for invading a peace-loving and benign country just to line the pockets of Bush, Cheney, and the Texas oilmen. Then there were the American contractors who were killed, burned, & hung from a bridge. Another terrible tragedy to be blamed on and exploited to the detriment of Bush. There’s the Humvees without enough steel plating, the defective body armor, and 1700+ dead soldiers. Then there are the bombings in Spain & Great Britain. My beef is with those opportunistic individuals who take advantage of every national/world tragedy to further their own personal agendas and political ideologies: Bush is evil, conservatives are bad, and a liberal must be elected (given the presidency) to rule the country. Please explain to me how ANY part of the hurricane disaster can be blamed on the Bush administration? Give me a break. Any president would have handled things exactly the same way. Even if Ross Perot had been elected in 2004, the situation wouldn’t be different. Things are happening/have happened due to the structure of bureaucracy from the federal level to the local level. Bush didn’t create or implement it. He didn’t have anything to do with it.
Let’s blame Bush because 40,000 national guard troops weren’t deployed in Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, & Louisiana two weeks ago. Or because barges of supplies weren’t pre-positioned (on dry land, waiting to be floated by the flood waters) in and around New Orleans. Or, better yet, how about because Bush wouldn’t sign the Kyoto treaty & the hurricane was an effect of global warning???
