Comparitively… Europeans in general do not work as much as Americans. Bob is dead on here… they get more holidays, work less hours.
Doesn’t sound so bad to me?
I’d rather be out cycling than working 50+ hours a week (with a lousy two weeks holidays) like the average american. We only get slightly more in Canada.
We can trash the Euro’s for being lazy, but I think we secretly envy all the free time they have in thier lives.
“yeah, that castle like many things was destroyed by war, but then they rebuild things the way they were before and pretend nothing happened”
Does any American talk about the war of 1812 when the Brits burnt down the White house and the Capitol? I think not…
No question Bobke is a character. I think that jury is still out on whether the schtick is just that . . an act or it’s the real deal. If you have ever met the man in person, he’s “out there” for sure. Say what you want, he keeps things interesting. I have decided to put him in the same category as other crazy commentators such as John Madden for Footbal and Don Cherry for Hockey.
He also had a crack that a rider tested positive for three substances that were banned in France … Deodorant, Tooth Paste and Mouthwash. Trautwig, Liggett and Sherwin let it slide but I was dying
“Shtick” comes from Yiddish and means and act or a show-business routine. It means that I think Bob’s “Tour day France” is basically something he does on purpose in an attempt to amuse.
A lot of economies plus a lot of marriages would probably be far better off if we could all do that. FWIW, most tech firms in Vancouver here are at 37.5h/week, no more (unless there’s a big fire). But we’re still no where close to the amount of vacation time the French get. Some of our customers are French and it’s impossible to work with them in July and Aug.
I’m always amazed that people get anything done working only 35 or 40 hrs a week. I’d guess my job has me at work closer to 70 or more hrs a week, although much of that is military specific stuff that doesn’t translate to the business world.

Maybe we are just more efficient and get it done quicker
