I lost 2.75 pounds at my swim today?

I’m a heavy sweater. I swam at the Y today. Indoor pool. Probably 80 degree water temp. Much warmer air temp. Swam for 1:15 pretty hard workout 3500m. It’s not uncommon for me to drop between 3-4 pounds during my swim. I lose about the same amount during land based workouts in heat if I’m not on top of my water consumption. This seems pretty extreme to me and puts me significantly behind the eight ball with regards to hydration. I know I can prehydrate but I hate swimming with a full gut. Anyone else have similar experiences?
Sorry, I’m bored today.

Unless you are doing 3500m straight through, why on earth don’t you drink in between sets?

I drank a 16 ounce bottle. That’s probably what kept me from losing only 2.75. I don’t have that option though in an IM swim.

Why are you attempting to hydrate with water ?

2 questions:

  1. Were you thirsty?

  2. Have you ever hunted antelope in the African savannah?

Sorry for the Noakesian humor.

Really though, the only problem I see with this is during a HIM or IM getting on the bike with a deficit. Shouldn’t be that big of a problem during training if you’re just doing a stand-alone swim workout. I try to go to bed hydrated but do very little additional hydrating before my am workout as I don’t like the bloated feeling or having to get out of the pool to pee.

hmm…getting OUT of the water to pee…interesting…I will have to try this new to me training technique some day. Not today or tomorrow but someday.
