But the announcers online started comparing him to Tiger Woods and Federer…I think thats quite over the top. He has not been in the sport long enough to even consider throwing his name in that hat.
And we all know you have to win Kona to be labeled legit
Congrats again Brownlee, great to see a 21 year old rocking it! How about team GB? Looks like Coach Joel is going a pretty good job
Except it’s a very appropriate comparison when you consider how good those guys were when they were very young. Both Tiger and Roger made impacts from an extremely young age. In tennis that is more typical, but in golf, Tiger made an impact at an age much younger than most golfers do. I think that’s where it’s appropriate to compare his to Brownlee, who is still well before what is the typical prime for a triathlete. Even Gomez was quite a few years older than Brownlee when he exploded with 17 (IIRC) consecutive ITU podiums.
In many ways, it’s actually inappropriate to compare Tiger and Roger, because Roger was the young guy with a ton of talent who always let emotions get the better of him and never performed up to expectations (until he finally did, and then has continued to do so).
Yeah, that’s a bit over the top,
He is not even at Gomez level yet in terms of success, obviously, but in terms of impact at his age, then yes I would make the comparisons.
He has a bright future ahead of him.
well, there have always been plenty of talented young guys that were expected to make an impact. sometimes it pans out, but it’s probably just as likely that they don’t - just ask ryan leaf.
just let someone really good coach yoder in running for the next 10 months, then lets see yoder vs. brownlee, non-drafting, olympic or 70.3 … we can throw bozzone into the mix too, just so that he doesn’t feel too old (yet). that hungarian-american running/triathlon kid will have to wait his turn for a few years. young people throwdown! bennett stands by and sobs … potts checks for wrinkles and crows feet

If you are going down that route how about throwing in Phil Graves IMUK and IM 70.3 champ Bronze medalist in the UK national 100mile Time Trial. A Yoder vs Graves bike race might be interesting!
That’s debatable. Fed won his first slam a few weeks before turning 22. A fairly normal age for a male tennis player to win a first slam (for those who do), if you remove a few exceptions (Becker, Chang for instance or Sampras who won his first slam at 19, but had to wait 3yrs for a second slam). He turned pro in 99 (technically mid 98), won his first tournament 2 years later, and first slam 2yrs later.
