It’s pretty common in sport where courses need to be certified against a set standard and must conform to certain parameters. FIS for example, demands homologation on all of its race courses. Some sports use a different term, but most “race the clock” sports have some version of it.

In motorsports, for certain production car based sports car classes, to be eligible a car must be
“homologated” meaning a certain minimum number of cars must have been sold to the public.
That’s where the “GTO” in car names orginated. It first appeared on the Ferrari 250 GTO in the early 60’s. “Gran Turismo Omologato.” Omologato is for the Italian word for homologated.
