I just did a Marathon 13.1!

See how silly that sounds? So why do they have to call it an Ironman 70.3 and not just a Half Ironman? I have only done 1/2’s and I am OK with that. Stupid WTC branding. OK end of rant.

You have to get a 13.1 sticker now. I’d put one on my car, but there’s no room with all my 5K stickers.

corrected your post

Sometimes people wonder why dirty hippies get upset about corporate bs.

Well, because of the bs part

like “Ironman 70.3”

nobody likes it!

That’s OK, I’m actually doing an Ironman 69.1 next weekend so rant away!!!

JJ

Whoa. How do you do the .1?

sweet thanks man. it’s funny, i was going to get my cousin a 5K sticker as we joke about this all the time. Didn’t think I’d be able to find one, but oh no - here:

I almost bought one, but couldn’t support the cause.
I love “5k sticker for runners who love running the 3.1 mile distance” at the bottom.

I dislike the term “mini marathon” for that distance, too.

C’mon dude, do the math. That’s 1.2 short of 70.3. I’m a stonefish (some people call them duathletes). I’m doing a training bike/run at the N.O. 70.3 to get ready for Du Nats 3 weeks later by recruiting a swimmer and doing a relay.
Can I call myself an IRONMAN now?
JJ

Is it really that big of a deal? I just don’t get why people get so worked up over what WTC calls there race. Never a bad time to trash WTC.

Walmart, Nike, McDonalds, Microsoft, etc… I guess once a company operates so effectively that it dominates it’s competion, it becomes cool and trendy to hate them. I’ve never understood it.

Thom

NO!

You can call yourself an IRO

Sorry…it was really just a lame sex joke.

I want ‘13.1" - half the length, double the fun’.

Damn, if I could just do that last 1.2 I’d be at 50% and by mathematical convention we could round it up to the next letter and I could at least be an IRON. How about if I do an extra 1.5 miles on the bike for good measure?

i want one that just says “5”

You really can’t understand why people hate bs marketing?

I mean I can understand not agreeing with them but you can’t understand it? Are you being obtuse?

I don’t think I’m being obtuse. I understand indifference, I understand disapproval I even understand mocking and snickering. It’s the “hate” part I don’t understand. Is it really that important?

Thom

Nothing about our sport is important in any grand sense, no.

But to people who love the sport, yeah, labeling people Ironmen who stopped halfway is kinda lame =)

The WTC is watering down their product. Soon everyone will be an “IronMan” and then the term will no longer have it’s prestige. Once that happens the entire brand goes downhill. Don’t worry, as soon as they see a decline the VC group will sell WTC at a nice profit

I am not against WTC making money at all. They have a good product. I just think they don’t have a good long term (more than 5 years) strategy and why should they, they are a VC group which is looking for return on investment in 3-5 year span. that is why there is now a IM cologne that smells like you after 11 hours of racing.
