I just bonked

A few weeks ago, I started riding to work… It’s a 32 mile back road trip. I have been driving to work on Tuesday, riding home, and then ride back the next morning and drive home…

Today I decided to ride there and back and I paid the price by not bringing any nutrition on the ride home and probably not eating enough throughout the day… An hour into the trip I started to feel real tired, then I noticed my thighs starting to twitch with any sort of power. I had to stop at an A&P and pick up some Gatorade and cliff bars. They got me home, but not till I had to walk up the final 1 mile climb with the last 300 meters being 11%. I attempted to ride, but my thighs just seized up on me…

Lesson learned, even a 32 mile jaunt can take it out of ya when you’ve done 32 in the morning…

I hate that feeling but better in training then in the race. Let’s eat!

Leave a large stash of snack/ride food at work so you’ll be set for a while. I have a case of gu, some cookies and gatorade. I’ve been doing the 60 mile commute for a few weeks as well. It’s definitely getting easier. Last week I had enough energy for a short run after my afternoon ride.
