Revenue down 5% and profits down 30%. No macdonalds cannot absorb an almost doubling of the minimum wage. Can’t link the wsj article so here is a commentary.

I actually hope Crackdonalds goes under. They serve fucking poison.
Too many people like eating crap so Mickey d’s is here to stay.

So they can absorb a doubling of the minimum wage?
Trying to be funny? There will always be slobs who eat to much crap. But fortunately not enough to absorb a doubling of the minimum wage.
I got a better idea. How about some if these losers better themselves with job skills people value more than minimum wage.

There are people who are not as fortunate as those of us on slowtwitch. I have a nephew with mental health issues who will never be able to handle a job even this difficult. He’s fortunate that my brother can take care of him. A job at McD’s would be a huge step forward for him. And let’s not forget a lot of high school kids work at McD’s.
Can you live on $7.50/hr.? There is such a thing as a working wage that keeps working people above the poverty level and $7.50/hr won’t cut it. I’m very much in favor in a society where the minimum wage keeps people above the poverty level. That would be my suggestion to lowering crime. But I guess yours is just to buy more guns?
Interestingly, McDonald’s and other fast food chains have been working diligently towards fully automating their store operations - computerizing the entire chain of events from taking your order to providing your food.
If you thought automating the auto industry drastically reduced jobs, just wait until the fast food chains begin beta testing computerized restaurants.
This is why I will tell my children that, no matter what, you need to get an education. As this country continues to make advancements in AI, many of the remedial tasks we used to consider as “low wage employment” will continue to go away.

Taking orders at a McDonald’s or any other fast food establishment was never, ever intended to provide a ‘working wage’. Tell me, what is a ‘working wage’ to you, anyway?
Next up, ‘working wage’ for filling out applications and sitting on the couch.

People like your nephew aren’t picketing nor
Are they raising families. The excuse given. My assistant has a handicapped son in his 40’s. He works minimum wage and gets a disability check.
Like you mentioned. Jobs at Mickey d’s are for high school students. To learn the basics of the work environment. Not meant to be a career. When I was in high school I worked in commercial and residential painting. When I turned 18 I was able to do industrial. That paid 2.50 more than the minimum wage and I learned a lot from it.
You also talk about the living wage crap. That means you do not understand economics. A price floor crowds out those with skill below the value if the floor. It also forced those willing to work below the floor into the shadows. It created inflation in the market since people are paid too
Much and not as thrifty. I described in detail the bottom to top effect a
Couple Of times. Since you have chosen to forget use the search function. Living wages just created a new poverty level or crowds out the unskilled.

No I’m just trying to understand what you’re saying. In one post you said McDonald’s can’t absorb the doubling of minimum wage and then a couple of posts later you said they’re here to stay.
Yeah it would be nice if losers weren’t losers.
I am a business owner and while I am not creating any jobs, I do have positions for nonskilled people and I am willing to pay $15/hr. The trouble is the positions actually require people to work and be held accountable.
The point is most physically and mentally capable people working at jobs that pay <$10/hr do not want to do what it takes to hold down the $15/hr jobs that aleady exist. This is my firsthand experience.

If its a full time adult employee working at McD’s that shows up every day and does their job then they should be paid enough to live above what is considered the poverty line. There is a definition of this but is variable by the area in which you live based on cost of living. Bottom line is that you can’t get a minimum wage to keep you out of poverty then why bother working when crime can be more lucrative. We have to pick what kind of society we wish to create.
We’ve seen a real erosion of wages vs living standard at the lower ends of the spectrum. When we had a strong manufacturing base unskilled people could still get a decent enough job on a factory assembly line and maintain a decent working class lifestyle. Now that everything is being off shored or automated that demographic is floundering badly as the middle class continues to be squeezed and the 1% continues to get richer.
“I do have positions for nonskilled people and I am willing to pay $15/hr. The trouble is the positions actually require people to work and be held accountable”
Then you have to find the right people. But I hear you. I live in an area near a rougher blue collar small city that is hurting with lots of lay offs, plant close downs, etc. A new distribution center is moving in and is hiring 300 new people. Its great for me because I’ve been assigned to do all the pre employment physicals and testing for everyone of these folks, but they are having trouble finding “qualified” people in the area since they want a high school education and no criminal record and a shocking number of people don’t have that. That’s sad, really sad. So I do see it from both sides.
So I have a question on this. What if I had enough maths and English to do the job but no hs diploma? Should they really be denied an opportunity for work if they have the functional qualifications but not the paper? It could be a very motivated employee for the chance.
And say I had a 20 year old possession conviction? Blocked from employable?
These hard and fast conditions strike me much like zero tolerance in schools. A little common sense here could well get deserving folk back on track. Yeah more work for HR, but worth it.

There it is. That word. The worn out liberal do-gooder rallying cry, ‘should___________________’. Just fill in the blank with whatever cause du jour is bothering your sense of social justice.
And, no, just showing up for a job that requires virtually no skills whatsoever and passing 21 birthdays shouldn’t guarantee anyone a certain lifestyle. If you create an environment where that is the case, what is the inducement to get people to stay in school and away from criminal activity? People will do what it takes to get the resources they need and/or want by the minimal amount of effort required to get them. It isn’t the government’s responsibility to force society to prop up the lives of unmotivated people and crooks with artificially high wages. Nanny states do not succeed. The worst thing you can do to these people is feed their delusions that they can ‘get by’ with no education. Raising the minimum wage is just another ploy by the Democratic party to maintain control over uneducated people. They are modern day voting slaves.
Last, pulease get over the ‘middle class getting squeezed’ and ‘1% richer’ memes. You sound like a disgruntled Obamaphile.

Hopefully McD’s is here to stay. They are one of the largest employers in the world. Not to mention, there are thousands of employees that started off making minimum wage at McDonalds and are now making 6 figures as managers for the franchisees…but, I’m assuming since they serve “poison” they should find other careers.
What does anything you said have anything to do with what I posted?
There seems to be no shortage of people willing to work McDonald’s for what they’re paying now.
Basically, if pay those guys $15 and hour, then $15 becomes the base. If I want to retain my good employees, suddenly I have to double their pay. That means double my payroll tax, workers comp, etc.
That means my good employee gets fired because I can’t afford that.
Yay!
Why do you resent that someone might earn a measly $15 bucks an hour?

No there isn’t such a thing but keep thinking political buzzwords are reality. Utopia is that way>>>>>>>.
