I Have New Level of Appreciation for Slowtwitch & Thanks RROOF

I’ve been on ST for several years. I’ve been given a lot of great help and advice on many topics. But the help I received recently from Dr. Rodney Roof has redefined (for me) what the real value of ST is.

Nearly 11 weeks ago, just 3 days before IMCDA, I was out on a short run. Car was packed, bike loaded and I was headed to CDA. This was supposed to be my 4th IM. Out on a 20 minute run I stepped on a rock in the road (about the size of a tennis ball) and rolled my left foot to the outside and broke my 5th metatarsal (technically an avulsion fracture). In denial, I limped home, jumped in the car and started driving to CDA. When my foot was the size of a Nerf football I stopped in Missoula, MT and got an x-ray. It was broken. And there was no way I would be able to get my foot in a shoe on Sunday. In a walking boot and crutches I turned my car around and drove back to Salt Lake City with my tail between my legs. My first DNS. I don’t have to explain the details of this loss.

With nothing but time on my hands I started reaching out to other athletes who had experience with this injury. Dr. Rodney Roof (rroof) was one of several people on ST who offered advice and help. Dr. Roof and I traded PMs and emails back and forth for the past 11 weeks. He’s saved me a lot of worry and brain damage with his friendly and sound advice. He connected me to other helpful athletes on ST who had the same injury - Sentania and JJD. Hearing their experiences has helped me as well. Last week I removed the walking cast/boot and I’ve been able to swim, bike and walk (running is down the road a bit). The rebuilding process has begun.

Dr. Roof is a great example of what makes Slowtwitch an amazing community and a valuable resource. This experience has redefined what ST means to me. Thank you Slowman for making all of this possible.

No argument there! With all of my foot injuries, Rodney has offered up free advice and been super helpful. Fantastic guy in person too! Truly one of the most invaluable resources on ST!

I hear you. rroof and others have been great resources for me as well. Even testimonies from fellow sufferers can help inform and inspire.

x2. Rodney is such a nice guy–has advised me through several troubling lower leg injuries. He did a great job helping me set my bike up to avoid an imbalance issue that was causing me much pain in my peroneal tendon.

  • blushing *

I’m sure there is some emoticon for blushing, but I’d have to ask my 13 yr old daughter. LOL.

I echo your sentiments. RROOF has helped me through a year long bout with PF (after seeing him, I was running pain free within one week). He also is a great neighbor, great sounding board and technical savant for anything with 2 wheels or an Apple logo. Just don’t play name that group, the dude loves 80s music.

He guided me thru some road rash earlier in the year for which I was very thankful. We are lucky to have him here in Greater Cincinnati and share him with ST…or is it the other way around??

Props to rroof!

BTW - what kind of doctor are you? That’s a lot of foot issues!

Totally agree. He gave me plenty of help and made me a more informed patient.

Throw out geography and I’d see him on a regular basis. Geography is in his favor in this case.

That is Awesome!!! I am glad getting info on ST has helped yoo i know the community has helped me a lot also. Sorry to hear about your DNF , but technically itnis not a DNF if you did not start :0) it sucks knowing with ball the training we do a race , half a season or even a whole season can be taken from us in the blink of an eye. With the cost of things I think RD’s have to start being more reasonable with their cancelation policies. Any liscencsed insurance brokers want to go in business selling entry fee insurance to can you post injury and recovery here?

To help others to find if they search injury or recovery.
Thanks! And hope in your comeback you were faster then before ;0)

LOL! Thanks gasman - I wonder if people know that you really ARE my neighbor  Playing 80’s music trivia in the OR now with the scrub/circulators …

Rod also helped me with an injury last year. He’s good peeps.

could not agree more. He even had time to send me, a complete stranger, a roll of tape for my PF a while back.

Where is his practice located? I am struggling with a PF issue right now. Thanks

x 100…

Cincinnati. Good luck.
