I have a fork

I have a Kuota fork that has a cracked steerer tube 4 7/8" above the races. The crack is not all the way through. That leaves about 1" to safely mount a stem, meaning that the crack will be under the top half of the stem. Is this possibly ok? I have a carbon repair kit but don’t think the fork will mount if I add carbon to the steerer tube’s diameter.

What would you do?

I bought another fork, but the rake is too shallow for this frame. The broken fork is a 45 degree rake.

If the crack was above the stem, you could cut off that part of the steerer (assuming the crack has not propagated).

But having a crack under your stem? No way. A fork failure while riding is extremely dangerous, death or permanent injury is possible. So don’t do it.

.

While carbon repair is a very feasible solution, if you know what you’re doing, this sounds a bit too risky; I would not mess with it.
Especially since it’s a fork that can be relatively easily replaced.

Alternatively, and I don’t know if this is possible in your setup, you can cut the steerer to remove the cracked bit and re-install into your frame less some spacers.

Thanks, guys. This was my conclusion as well. Bummer. I hate throwing stuff out…
