I just feel somehow down these days. Don’t know quite why. I am on a vacation, ok, staycation it is. We moved to a new house, kids are ok, wife is ok, yet I just feel blah. The last day at work threw me off, I just wasn’t “there” for the patient, patient was upset with me, her husband was upset and I just didn’t handle it as well as I could or should have. Maybe they will file a complaint, maybe they won’t. I won’t be fired, I just wish I handled the situation much better, the way I could have. I wish I have shown to the patient the real me, the clown, the motivator and that stuff. And then I watch all the shit on the TV and just feel down.
So recommend me funny book, tell mt to HTFU, to have a pint. I just want to be happy.
I like to take my pants off an “dance” in front of a mirror. The flopping never fails to bring a smile to my face ![]()
As for a funny book…my number one go to is any of the Calvin and Hobbes anthologies. (I know, probably not the type of book you were looking for, but I dare you to be depressed after 5 minutes with the two of them).
Secondary recommendation…A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Confederacy_of_Dunces)
Amy Schumer’s autobiography is decent

Me Talk Pretty One Day
.
American Gods by Neil Gaiman or Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
I hope this is a temporary blip and you cheer up soon. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or find someone to talk to. The LR crew has been very kind and helpful to me over over the past few months.
I happened to pick that up at one of those leave a book stands. It is very funny.

Why do you think I suggested it? ![]()
I just watched “Hotel Rwanda†with my teenage daughter, which she had to watch ahead of doing a school project. Not sure it’s what you’re after - certainly the opposite of funny - but could give you some perspective that we’ve got things pretty good.
Life of the Party: Stories of a Perpetual Man-Child by Bert Kreischer.

What the fuck is wrong with you? He’s bummed out so you suggest the obvious: a movie about genocide?

You really do struggle with reading.
The sellout by Paul Beatty. A satire about a black guy in la who tries to reintroduce segregation and slavery, with the case going to the Supreme Court. Really hilarious!
No more positive feedback for you. And you are sentenced to read, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”
I found “born a crime” a surprisingly good read. It’s by Trevor Noah, and it describes his youth and upbringing. Apart from being well-written and funny, I also learned that life in South Africa during the apartheid years was even stranger than I thought.
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
American Gods by Neil Gaiman or Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
I love both those books. I’m not sure American Gods is ‘funny’. It has amusing parts but it is often dark and thought-provoking.
My recommendation for funny books:
- “Bossypants” by Tina Fey if you want something Autobiographical
- “Hyperbole and a Half” by Allie Brosh - if you like silly humour with a comic book format.
- “What If” by Randall Munroe if you like Science & Engineering
Travels with Charley by Steinbeck.
+1 on Hitchhikers Guide - read that then go down the rabbit hole of googling/researching the actual importance of the number 42 in the universe. Stop when you get to the point of the relationship 42, pi, golden ratio, the Fibonacci sequence and the universe OR keep trucking but make sure to come back here and explain it to me.
“A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson. He and a out of shape beer guzzling buddy decide to hike the Appalachian trail. The book is 100% about their actual journey. It’s awesome.
Not funny but one I can’t put down right now is “Sapians: A Brief History of Humankind”. While it won’t make you chuckle it will help put the behavior of all us talking monkeys into perspective.
Also go for a trail run or something out in the sticks. Something on dirt with plenty of green around you.
I cannot recall the exact name of the book but it was something like “Living with a Seal”. The guy hires David Goggins to live with him for thirty days. Goggins agrees but the author has to do whatever is suggested every day. When I saw this book come out, I initially balked at buying it because I thought it would be non-entertaining. A friend had it and offered to lend it to me. Since it was free, I read it. My wife heard me laughing at all the stupid crazy stuff that Goggins requires the author to do that she ended up reading it herself.

I did a winking smiley face though
