I confess, IMLP

…I was the guy on the mountain bike…

yes, but did you have aerobars (I saw this in a recent race)?

…I was the guy on the mountain bike…
I was the guy on the couch, with my feet up in aero positon with the beer in my hand.

Was that you in the finisher’s video? How did you make it for the day?

Seriously? We saw you go by and were wondering if you made the cutoffs. Also, we were wondering why you were on a Mountain Bike. Care to share?

…I was the guy on the mountain bike…

On Saturday at Spudman I saw a mtn bike with an aero-water bottle on the front of the flat bars… suweeet.

I went by you and someone behind me said to you “I bet your butt feels better than mine”.

You had that nice beach cruiser springy seat looked comfy. Running a granny gear I bet you just spun right up the 3 bears.

What was the motivation and did you make the cuts?

Dude, do the rest of us a favor and enter EVERY IMNA event for the next year. When I saw your setup in transition, I felt like kicking myself. I spent the whole year obsessing about doing a certain time and place in this race, and seeing your rig reminded me of why we really should be doing these things. I’m sure you enjoyed the experience a lot more than I did, and you deserved it because you have a way more spiritual approach to it than I did. Kudos!!!

yes, but did you have aerobars (I saw this in a recent race)?

Last year at a sprint I saw a guy on a Rockhopper with aero bars and the biggest, fattest knobby tires I have seen. For 1/4 the price of the bars he could have gotten some slicks at least. I hope no one at his LBS actually knew and/or approved that set up.

Awesome!!! I have alwasy wanted to do Iroman on a mtn bike and run in sandals.
Please please tell me you made it,

Wouldn’t running in sandals really really hurt?

I believe at IM-Canada a few years back a couple of dudes biked on kids bikes. And if I remember correctly - not that slow either. I think one bike was a little girls bike, with a basket hanging from the handlebars!

Erik Lake of CT was DNF…probably got knocked down by jealous guys on Cervelos.

nope, no aerobars, just the standard dual suspention mtb with smoth tires, and green and yelow hand grips.

Although i’ve seen guys in adventure races with aerobars on their mountain bikes.

Yes, that was me in the finishers video, they felt so sorry for me that they put me in that video

I DNFed. But i gave it my all.

Why did you DNF? Did you not make the bike cutoff or did you have other problems? That is awesome in the video to see you cruising along. I saw a guy in 2003 riding a Cannondale MTB in LP also. Do you just not own a tri bike or did you do this on a dare?

The truth of the matter is that I hadn’t swam, not once, in 10 months. Got a 1:40 swim time.

I had ridden my mtb downhill at a ski resort the week before the race and other than that pretty much the last time i bike trained was last May (2004), and I got patella tenonitis in both knees over the winter trying to run once a week, averaging about 6 miles a week.

So realistically i was the least trained person in that whole race, and you could really say that i wasn’t trained at all.

But all that aside, I like a good challange.

Most important, are you going back for another crack at it?

Great work out there. Go with slicks in '06 and you’ll make the cutoff easy.

At St. Croix '04 a bunch of us didn’t get our bikes from the airline until the last minute. Subsequently we were fully prepared to go to Plan B: rent beach cruisers from a local shop and go on a 5-hour Island Tour out of T1. It would’ve been a long ride, but what a memory. I was actually a little disappointed when the bikes showed up late on the day before the race. Think about it: bathing suits and flip-flops, water bottles filled with a little rum punch. Maybe pack some cucumber sandwiches to enjoy halfway up The Beast. It wouldn’t be a bad way to spend a day.

Thanks, that was part of the motivation from me. I know so many people who ‘buy’ into triathlon, with the fancy bikes, and one piece suits, and that is great, I love to see people who live in the moment and are passionate. But I also wanted to show people that you can’t take yourself to seriously in this day and age, and that you don’t need a $5000 bike to have fun.

So I took the day one moment at a time. It was the most unbelievable day out there, mountain town, sunny, breezy. I could think of nothing better do do then go for a nice swim and a bike ride.

I was able to make the first bike leg cutoff by about a minute or so (4:30 split), but my legs were toast and i knew i wouldn’t be able to make the next lap in the 4 hour cutoff, so i had to gracefully withdraw.
