I had a Renn clincher disc. There was enough play at the valve stem to tip it outward, attach a valve extender, then use a regular pump to pump the tire. Easy as pie.
I just got a set of Zipp 909s. There’s no play at the valve stem at all, so the valve extender trick won’t work. So I have to use the crack pipe.
The pump end of the crack pipe doesn’t seem to want to fit into the shraeder hole of my pump. Seems to me when I’ve used crack pipes before, they did fit into the pump head. Do I have to buy a second pump and permanently attach the crack pipe with a hose clamp? I just replaced the pump head. I don’t want to force the thing and wreck a new pump head.
And also, how do you hold the crack pipe head on the tire valve while you pump the tire? Does pumping the tire have to be a 2-person operation? Ridiculous! There must be a better way. But I don’t know what it is. Experts, please advise.
I permanently attached the crack pipe years ago to my silca pump. I use it on all my wheels, road wheels, aero wheels, discs, mtn bike wheels.
The trick!! ---- I have the valve on the “other side” of the wheel I’m pumping up. I pass the crack pipe either through the spokes or over the disc. I hold this on with my left hand. The pump is placed between my feet. I use one arm, pressing straight down and bending my knees with my arm straight. I can pump my Tufos up to 200 psi with a Silca pump this way.

Um … what do you weigh?
That’s some thanks for your kind response, isn’t it. Sorry. I’m not sure I follow what you mean when you say, “I have the valve on the “other side” of the wheel I’m pumping up.” Can you elaborate?
Careful about the weight jokes…I went on Lipitor last Oct and over the next 12 months with no change in workouts or diet, gained 20 pounds. I,m shooting for the old 173 again. I’m back down to 182. Started loosing weight as soon as I quit the drug.
As for your question:
I use HED3’s and can only access the hole from one side of the rim. So I put the valve stem opposite the side I’m standing on. This allows me to get a better hold of the crack pipe/valve stem. When I pump up the spoked road wheels I pass the crack pipe through the spokes so the hose and crack pipe approach the valve from the opposite side I’m standing on. For the disc…same old thing except I pass the hose and pipe over the wheel to the opposite side I’m standing on…damn…I think I’m confused now…get it?
