The standard method of putting a treat in front of the nose and moving it sideways doesn’t work. The dog can speak, shake, lie down, come and dance on hind legs. Not having anything to do with roll over.
What trick will you dog just not do?
Standing still. My daughter shows our dog in 4h and she will do just about anything but does not understand standing still- she just sits or lays down when she is supposed to be standing for the judge. She might be my spirit animal.
Small breed or Bull Dog? My Boston is exactly the same, he doesn’t like showing his belly for any reason. Maybe it’s a defence mechanism or something.

All of my dogs have been trained to roll over but the current one was the biggest challenge. I had to work on play dead first and get that solid and then progress from playing dead to physically starting her rolling over to leading with a treat until she suddenly just started doing it.
One of my other dogs refused to lie down on command for the longest time.

Tricks? Yeah… she don’t do tricks. Sadly…
Small dog. couton de touler. Like a Bichon. Likes a bell scratch but hates rolling on her back to expose her belly. She is on to me when I try to roll her over.
Opposite problem. My 130lb dog is a porn star. She flops on her back and spreads her legs as soon as anyone approaches. She usually gets a belly rub out of it.
I make a circular motion with my hand. My girl always rolls counterclockwise and is never exposing her belly long enough for her to be concerned. She knows she has to pop all of the way over for the treat. She will even do it on command in front of people.
She also shakes, high fives, knows left from right, straight, cross, slow etc. Been working on crossing paws. That one is very slow going. I never taught play dead. I lost my two prior within two months of each other then waited eight months before I got her. Not something I think I could ever be comfortable with her doing.
