Slowman- Crashed hitting a manhole cover ( possible broken collar bone )

.

the new bike was great. it handled perfectly, did everything it was supposed to. i rode over a manhole cover that was depressed below the surface of the road. which was fine. until i hit the road on the other side of the manhole. then the bike just stopped, and i slide forward, and ended up in the egg position, chest laying on the armrests. no steering. ass over teakettle.

just pilot error. i could race that course 50 times and never crash. the road surface around the manhole was sprayed painted with an orange warning, i just somehow didn’t notice it.

it’s my second crash on the bike over the past 20 years, so, my record is reasonably good. unfortunately, both this crash and my previous one 10 years ago were about identical in terms of outcome. except that one was on the other side.

this one is a little worse, more broken ribs than the last crash. i hate broken ribs.

i had a good one going. i think i would’ve posted a pretty good time. i’d only last week set a PR on our 20-mile timed loop we use here at the compound to judge relative fitness, on my 4th ride on the slice. i was downplaying expectations because i’m a pussy, but, in actuality, tho i’m a little overweight, i was putting out a reliable 280w to 300w over 60 minute efforts.

but that’s the way things go!

Watching the coverage yesterday I told my wife was really surprised nobody went down in the construction areas. The pros were really bouncing around.

Sorry to hear about the crash. I hope you heal fast and get back on the bike soon. BTW, I hate broken ribs, every moves hurts.

Hows the bike?

The bike is fine. It’s sitting in the trunk of my car. Only damage seems to be to one of the grips on the right pursuit position of Dan’s aerobars.

I’ve been doing some digging and have yet to see positive confirmation of the previously quoted times. Did a little spying on their Facebook pages, lots of “That was fun” and “LA is great”… Nothing with regards to their overall times… I’m guessing our Tri-All Stars were just slightly humbled by the “purebred” cyclists, who by the way constantly amaze me (20 Mile TT, 29-30 MPH, AFTER a 135 miles mountainous stage 6… SHIZZER!!)

The wife and I were talking about dinner tonight and could not decide. Then it hit me I love ribs

Hope you feel better Dan and your new bike is okay. Broken ribs hurt like HELL!!! Maybe try a bit of sweet baby ray’s BBQ sauce on them

Dan, I’m really sorry to hear about your crash. I was wondering why I didn’t see you after the first lap! I can bring you at least a little good news; I managed to get a good shot of you on your first pass by me.

cool! i’m looking forward to seeing the pics.

Macca just posted that his was 46:15 as the official results.

I feel for you Sloman. I crashed last week.

Broken scapula (2x), collar bone, and 5 ribs.

I think the scapula and collar bone are causing the most consumption of pain meds.

The ribs hurt a little breathing, but as long as nobody tells a joke they don’t piss me off.

definitely sounds like you got the worst of it. i’ve got the DVD of my xrays, but i haven’t screwed up the nerve to look at them yet. i’m going to give them to my orthopod, and look at them some other time, when i get a little distance between me and the event. but i can pretty much tell where everything is broken, because i can feel the bones indexing.

I sincerely hope you feel better soon and don’t need much pain medication.

2 years is enough. Try not to “3-peat” your summer tradition of breaking ribs next year!

Macca just posted that his was 46:15 as the official results.

That’s good to know. I was doing my best to listen to the announcer and watch the timing board, which changed every time a rider went over it, so my 49:11 could EASILY have been wrong. Does anyone know yet where the official results are/were posted?

So did Chrissie chick any of the Tour riders?

So did Chrissie chick any of the Tour riders?

If my time of 51:30 is correct for her, then no. But now I have no idea if any of my times were right. I was trying to watch the timing board - which changed every time a rider crossed and cross-check that with what I heard from the announcer, but it was sketchy at best. My guess, for example, is that the 49:11 I THOUGHT I saw for Macca was another rider finishing either just before or just after him… I really hope they make some official results public, since right now, there’s nothing…
