I Can See Why Locals in Lake Placid Dislike Ironman Week

We take up a decent amount of the road…more of an inconvenience, but it still sucks for them. This dude walking infront of me on the side walk bypasses the crosswalk then procedes to cross the street about 15ft later cutting infront of a car. The driver calls him out on it and tells him to use the crosswalk and the dude replies with some smartass remarck…real classy. I know it is just one example, but still…

Maybe it is all the weirdos walking around in a Speedo…

oh man you saw me do that…pre race jitters. But seriously i think its the same as any city hosting a large event and I too can see why they’d be pissed off.

I wonder if the Horse Show crowds are just as bad? That is as big of an influx as IM. I think it goes on for a couple of weeks. And they make IM triathletes look like paupers in the money department.

Horse show doesn’t compare to IM.
LP has 2,600 residents in 1.5 sq mi’s.
LP IM has 2,000 participants + their families.

Our population has literally doubled.

WTC just extended the agreement with Lake Placid for 3 more years…

I’m walking down the sidewalk yesterday in LP at 3:00 PM in the afternoon with lots of other people. Lady in tri gear comes by running at a fast pace on the sidewalk yelling “runner on your left” as loud as she can. As she goes by she then yells at an older couple who were not fast enough to get out of her way - “Come on move over for runners”. Why in the world would anyone decide to run on the sidewalk in LP at 3 PM and expect to have an open course! The problem is that just a few athletes acting like this, causes people to think ALL of us act this way!

I’m guessing the the horse show people do not ride their horses on the sidewalks in LP yelling - Horse rider on your left".

tremendous number of dicks in our sport and she is one of them. very embarrasing for other triathletes.

Did you notice the race bracelet on the person? Or was the person possibly friend, family or otherwise supporter who needed a quick workout because they “ain’t” racing this weekend?

Either way it is very sad and embarrassing. But it is also easy for us to critique looking in from the outside. We might actually be quite surprised if someone with a video camera followed us and showed us the footage later.

oh god, that has to be worse

Here we go with another “triathletes misbehave” thread.

Here is a gigantic reality check people: Tourists in general behave like assholes, not just triathletes.

Go to any resort or resort town anywhere when it is at capacity and watch the behaviour of people. A good 10-15% are rude, impatient and generall disrespectful of the place and people they are visiting. Why would we expect the tri community be any different? (although I certainly wish they would be different)

The people that act like dickheads on the road are dickheads at home too. I say call them out, to their faces, in front of their friends.

The problem is that just a few athletes acting like this, causes people to think ALL of us act this way!

Tom,

You are right. I have seen a few of* those* triathletes while in town this week. Thankfully, they are in the minority. As Dan Empfield said on the other related thread, it’s a numbers game - There are not that many of* those* triathletes around, but as the whole tri population grows, there are more of those triathletes.

Thanks for hosting the party last night! Good times

But surely they understand that the race is all about US and it’s an opportunity for them to celebrate OUR accomplishments and OUR goals.

its like a fraternity…all the public hears about are the negative things (booze, hazing, etc) rather than the good (philanthropy, grades, brotherhood)…welcome to our society
.

I would suggest we are different because we are descending on a place on masse for a common purpose, and as such, each and every one of us are ambassadors to our sport. This differs from a random collection of tourists. Your random toursit is unlikely to piss off the locals by yelling to get off the sidewalk, or block traffic by riding four abreast.

Face it, we will be conspicuous by the nature of our presence and sport, and as such, we should realize our actions related to those activities reflect ont he whole community of triathletes at large.

No, just running you over in their Range Rover after drinking all afternoon…

Last night at dinner our waitress was describing the crowds when the rugby tournament comes to town. Some places had to put up chicken wire because they had issues with people throwing each other off second-floor balconies in some of the bars.
