for only the second time this month. (I’ve been sick and stuff).
This has got to be my lowest swim month ever - I am at a grand total of 2800 yards. Even desert dude has swum more than that this month I bet (though if he’s still swimming in wetsuits he should have to divide his yards by two)
You’ve probably lost about 50% of your swim fitness…most of your triathlon season is ruined. You might be able to salvage a half-decent early-autumn race if you’re lucky.
Here is my workout, splits (I AM OUT OF SHAPE look at those 200s. But give me a week and I can take 20 seconds off them easily). 5000 yds was enough to tire me out
500 w/u
6 x
600 pull every 4th length fast
4 x first 3 middle length drill last 1 swim
6 x 200 on 3:00 (2:37, 2:39, 2:43, 2:43, 2:43, 2:45)
600 c/d
OHMYGOD it felt good to be back in the water. I’d forgotten none of it, was amazed at how much my body remembered. The feel of water - new, this coldness all around me and up to my hips as I slid my body off the edge. And then, water under my arms, my hands like paddles despite that they are tiny, my grip on it. The gentle fatigue in my legs as I used them more on the single-arm swimming, kicking flutter and it feels like it fluttering. There are walls - walls that I missile myself onto and the quickness of my flips, bouncing between the walls still oh it has been ten days since I’ve played wall tag. And today feels better than any of my Arizona swims, my college fishbowl both new and the most familiar thing in the world. I used to live here. Do you remember that?
When I start on the 200s my arms are already breaking down. The little muscle tears feel like the starts of cramps and each repeat, the fatigue sets in earlier. My lats ache now too, my shoulders are sore in all the right places because my technique is perfect today. You’d not have looked away.
Sore shoulders, what a precious thing, I savor it over the last 600, just turning laps until my stroke falls apart.

50%, I don’t know. I’ve lost a bit of the ‘feel’ of it, give me 2 days and I’ll be back to the 1:11 pace I was holding in AZ. If I did some 5:58s for 500s there but 2:43s for 200s today what percent swim fitness have I “lost”?
my stroke can’t fall apart b/c I dont have one in the first place.
The good thing about swimming is I could go back in a couple hours and my arms and shoulders would probably be just fine. Easy to recover from swimming. Plus I am young. Age and treachery DOES NOT ALWAYS WIN!!!
