In tapering for my most recent set of races, I have realised that I am completely addicted to sugar, anything with a high GI kick to it.
During tapering I have been training less and doing demanding sessions less frequently, so I don’t need energy drinks and other high GI foods to keep me going. Or so I thought. I am sticking, as usual, low GI foods but it seems this is not enough and my body craves that sugary hit.
I should point out, it’s not a hunger issue: I just want sugar! I just tried snacking on a banana and some mardarins to quell the need, but I couldn’t keep going and scoffed a nutri-grain bar, and DAMN it felt good. Quasi-orgasmic, in fact. That good!
I don’t think it’s a blood sugar issue, and I am eating plenty. It’s just that my body is used that high GI hit during and after training, something you need after a 3 hour bike, but not after a 30min jog!
BIG TIME!!! But I have managed to cut out any refined sugars unless RIGHT after a big workout. It is kind of good since now I get a treat after my workouts so it makes me want to workout even more.
But I still crave it. But when I do, I just drink some water or eat cucumber/carrots.
NUTRI GRAIN bar for a sugar addict!? LOL!!! I’m all about COOKIES!!! You are clearly not a sugar addict! I did recently read that lots of times when people crave sugar they’re lacking in protein, so make sure you’re getting plenty of protein! I think this is my problem as I don’t eat red meat or chicken!
