Hydrotail + Cervelo IAA seatpost - My Fix

After going through many Hydrotail brackets, with them either becoming stripped or worn down, I decided to try and use the existing holes on the seatpost and Hydrotail.

What follows is how I attached my Hydrotail to the Cervelo IAA seatpost on my P3C.

I hope that this is temporary as I understand that third-party manufacturers will be designing products for the mysterious holes on the seatpost.

Thoughts and comments?? I am somewhat concerned about the screws rubbing on the seatpost.

Todd,

I’ve had to deal with a couple of these so I’m interested. Let me make sure I understand what I’m looking at.
There are two screws that look like they go through the rear seat clamp hole and simply pinch the wings of the Hydrotail together.
There is a top screw that looks to be above the post and is likely resting on that little “saddle” that exists between the two seat clamp holes.
Then there’s on screw that goes through post (the only screw that goes through the post really) but this one doesn’t pinch or clamp the wings of the Hydro Tail it seems to just hold up the Hydro Tail and keep it from slipping down.

Is that all right?

Ian

Exactly. Well put. I should have described it in my post; so thank you.

As to the screw that goes through the post, I used a couple of the “thingies that sometimes screw onto tube values (sorry I don’t know what they are called)” for the HT to rest upon.

Notwithstanding, I understand that Beaker Concepts (the makers of the Hydrotail) will be soon releasing a mount for the seatpost at issue.

tried to make use of those mysterious holes. fabricated bracket in light cromo, painted carbon finish to match. can mount it two ways high & low for your preference.

I have done almost the same thing with my XLab flatwing, except you can use three screws through the big hole. Mine is an 06 p3c, so it doesn’t have any small holes in the seatpost - I simply rely on the clamping pressure from the 3 screws to hold the brackets in place. You simply remove the aluminum block and spacer things and turn each half “inside out” so the writing is on the inside of the brackets. I will post a pic when I get a chance. I have been using it for 2 months and it has never slipped, and has not caused any damage to my seatpost. Plus you can easily adjust the height of the bottles by rotating the brackets in the hole. You need to buy some longer screws to go through the seatpost hole and some locknuts (you also need locknuts for the bottle cages). What worries my about the hydrotail is that it looks like the carbon is flexing around the screws and might fatigue.

Yeah, I have the sucker pretty tight; Likely tighter than need be.

What concerns me about damage to the seatpost is that the screw threads actually touch the top of the seatpost and the inside of the large hole.

you could buy or make some grommets out of rubber/plastic and put them over the screws between the hydrotail plates

I tried that, but there were two problems:

  1. the fit is so tight that if you cover any of the screws the other screws will not fit; and
  2. it is next to impossible to get any grommets on the screws through the large hole.

What about cutting a strip of electrical tape or something similar in half, so it is only about 1 or 2cm wide. Then laying it one the top edge and wrapping it around the inside edge of the hole?
