Hy Vee ST Gathering

Starting to see a few more posts about the Hy Vee Triathlon coming up this weekend. How many STers are racing? Spectating? Anyone want to meet up at some point during the weekend?

I am racing in Davenport on Saturday morning, driving into Des Moines on Saturday afternoon. Would be able to hook up for dinner and/or drinks on Saturday night. I am going to do a long ride on Sunday morning (not racing…) and then spectating downtown for the two ITU races in the afternoon.

i really want to do the QC sprint…

I am racing hy-vee also

Grant

My wife and I thought about doing both but then decided to just do Hy-Vee on Sunday. We probably won’t do much on Saturday night given the early start (transition closes at 5:45 a.m. and race starts at 6:00) . Don’t know where we will be after the race except watching the pro’s. We may end up at El Bait Shop, 100 beers on tap, another 100 available and good mexican food. It’s just south of the Court avenue area.

Yeah i’d need a rocket up my ass to win age group cause ben collins is coming down so i was thinking about going and racing the QC one but i have to work… oh well.

I am coming down on Sunday. I hope to find a place to park close to the finish and then ride my bike to the swim and then ride back to the finish, am I crazy?

Folks,
I’m competing on Sunday and already have plans for Saturday night but would like to put some faces to the the ST handles

I’ll be riding an 07 Felt B2 with funky yellow tires on a hed trispoke/disc set up.

Yell as you pass me on the course

No, you will pri be alright you can there is a lot of parking downtown I would pri park in a ramp or there are some larger parking lots by the capital but its not to far from grays lake.

I’m in, just signed up last night! Sign up is still available at the Convention Center in downtown Des Moines on Friday/Saturday!

This is my first Tri ever so hopefully I didn’t bite off more than I can chew!

Look for me, I’ll be the dog paddler!

S-Back…

I will be at the Hy-Vee race and will be getting into town on Friday so I can pre-swim the course at 3pm (open from 3-6 I think). Anyway look for me on the Planet-X bike with the 50-101 tire setup.

I probably won’t be doing much “partying on the town” but hopefully I will find a few Sters to chat with before the race. I am in the 30-34 AG.

Good luck to all at the race!

I am competing. I’d be up for drinking until I pass out Sunday. Are there any bars along the pro course that have an outdoor patio where we could heckle, I mean watch, as they go by?

Okay i must have lost my mind but i gave my hours to someone else at work so i am doing the QC the day before. I’m up for and ST meet after the race since my legs will be super cooked.

I’ll have the cervelo with all the fun drop you can stand but i wont be there till saturday night after the QC race.

Does someone want to make up a phone list so we can meet up i am guessing it will be a pain to find anyone down there.

WhooooooooEEEEEEE!!!

I’ll see you guys at one of these 13 places Saturday night!!!

(from DesMoines Register)…

At least a dozen downtown Des Moines bars will participate in a pub crawl June 16 in an event tied to the Hy-Vee Triathalon.

The Coors Light Pub Crawlathon at 9 p.m. June 16 will include: Court Avenue Brewing Co., Liars Club, Royal Mile, Vaudeville Mews, the Lift, Johnny’s Hall of Fame, Hessen Haus, Buzzard Billy’s, El Bait Shop, High Life Lounge, Legends, Lounge 101 & Back Stage Bar.

The free event, produced by Historic Court Avenue Association and Iowa Beverage Systems, will include the chance to win a $1,000 mountain bicycle. Pub crawlers will need to have their hands stamped by at least 10 of the participating bars to enter the contest.

Just for y’alls info I believe the lake temp at Grays is currently sitting at 80 degrees.

Holy crap - I thought for sure 80*F had to be wrong…but it’s posted right there on the race home page. Damn!

We’ll be coming down on Saturday and staying at the Embassy Suites Sat & Sun nights. I’m up for a get-together at some point. A pre-race beer will be good for the body, and most definitely there will be post-race beer consumption!

Hey Grant - when are you going to head to QC? I thought I had myself talked out of a double and I was just going to do my hometown 5k Sat am. but now you’ve got me thinking. My wife will probably kill me if I say I’m going to do both, but QC is one of my favorite races. What to do, what to do…

I will be there. Yellow Trek Hilo with the $65 rear disc.

If the water is indeed 80F, you won’t even have to worry about my bike, just find me something for me to hang on to in the lake…

Considering the huge number of first-time triathletes at this race, I suspect (and hope) that the water temp will be at 78F or lower by race day. The water temperature currently listed on the website was taken at 8 PM on 6/11 – after a full day in the sun. I bet morning water temperatures will be a degree or two cooler. It is supposed to be very warm from now until race day though, so it’ll be close. Count on Hy-Vee to bring in trucks loaded with ice if necessary.

FWIW, I just swam outdoors today in Ames on a smaller body of water than Grey’s Lake. The water is nice, but nowhere near 78F. Odd.

In any case, I would like to officially throw my name into the running for the ST “lantern rouge” award at this weekend’s race. I’d be honored, really.

mm

Mr M…it won’t be close. 90’s forecasted for the rest of the week.

As I am one of those unlucky soles who has more hair on my back than on my head, it looks like I’m breaking out the razor this weekend. I really don’t want to shave, but I love the feeling of sllllllliiiiiiiding through the water with no drag.

Just look for the guy with razor cuts all over his body…that be me.

I’m going to leave friday night probably. Its not worth leaving at 2-3 am to get down there for pre-race and such. I think you can camp right by there so thats what i will probably end up doing. Cheapest way i can think of.

Hopefully by next year i’ll have a house down here and be able to put some people up for the weekend.

It’s the real deal I was there with at 0520 hrs this morning. Was much warmer than I expected. I’d been out of town all last week on a fishing trip and the water was 62 degrees. I probably ruined it when I predicted a wetsuit legal race. For those who care the beach area is closed all week if you want to swim you have to go in by the south side. Or go during the practice sessions. There was a few other swimmers out there early this AM. It should be a good race. I’m not sure what to expect. I was totally against this race at one time, now I’ve changed my tune.

Yeah - I don’t think the lake is very deep. I heard about 10’. I guess that will make it warm up in a hurry.

mm - were you swimming at Peterson’s? I want to say that has some spots 30 or 50’ deep. It’s always seemed a little colder to me than other area lakes.
