Hunger, weight loss and recovery days

As it stands I am 5’11", 193lbs, about 13 lbs higher than I would like to be. I am in the midst of a pretty advanced 1/2 IM training plan with a volume of 12-18 hours per week (right now I am a 5hr HIM, trying to get it down to a 4:30 this year). According to pretty much all the caloric needs calculators I have found online, this puts my BMR at around 4,000-4,200 calories per day, so I shoot for 3,700 on my active days (a little more on Saturdays, which is usually 3 hours of biking plus at least one hour of something else).

My question is, what about on my one off day a week? On recovery days I feel almost as hungry as the other six days of the week. Should I cut back significantly on those recovery days or does my body still need all that fuel to well, recover and rebuild? In case anyone was wondering, despite that fact that I am a 25-year old bachelor I eat an obnoxiously healthy diet and lots of protein. No sugar (except from fruit and enegry gels), fried food, starch or alcohol.

If you are doing 12-18 hours of training in six days per week, you need those calories on day 7. If you are worried go out and do “active recovery” like hiking that has a high calorie burn rate but will not inhibit recovery.

I loath saying this but CC is right.

You need those calories for recovery. Adjust up for extra training but don’t adjust down for days off. Make sense?
