Huckabee on evolution

In the debate, he didn’t really answer the question asked, but he did say the following:

“But, you know, if anybody wants to believe that they are the descendants of a primate, they are certainly welcome to do it. I don’t know how far they will march that back. But I believe that all of us in this room are the unique creations of a God who knows us and loves us and who created us for his own purpose.”

Anyone care to venture whether he believes we are descended from primates? What does “march that back” mean?

Well, by definition, humans ARE primates. Is he saying that no-one in the room was human, or descended from other humans??

I can only assume that he refers to non-human primates when he uses the term “primate”. I hope he understands what primate means, and was just dumbing it down for the great unwashed. But I doubt it.

I prefer to think that he was delivering a speech to an audience of dogs and cats. That makes for a much funnier visual.

Deja vu!

Well, that would explain why no one in the audience regarded himself/herself as a primate, or as descended from primates. It doesn’t explain why Huckabee excluded himself from that category, though.

March that back clearly means that one is descended from pond scum or some such single cell life.

"March that back clearly means that one is descended from pond scum or some such single cell life. "

It seems to me to be the whole argument against evolution is that no one wants to be campared to a monkey.

I compare my 3 year old to a monkey all the time. She thinks its funny.

Because she is smart and knows that monkeys are awesome! Monkeys are always funny and awesome. Smoking monkeys are the funniest things ever. Penn Jillette has a room that is full of smoking monkey paintings all lit with black lights. That is pimp.

Ken, why do you suppose the Democrats never get asked about their belief in God or evolution? They are all running to the G word now. Hillary says she couldn’t have gotten through Bill’s transgressions without her belief in God.

Do you suppose she believes in God, but figures he didn’t really factor in the creation of the world or life around us? Does she believe we descended from pond scum or whatever?

I am trying to figure that one out myself. What does it matter?

Are the Repub candidates getting dumber with every election? Can’t imagine Nixon, Dole, Goldwater, GW Snr, or even Reagan not knowing that humans are primates. Wow. I’d scarcely believe any one of them, with the possible exception of Reagan, would even contest evolution.

What does what matter? What Hillary believes or why the media only asks Republicans what they believe?

Ken, why do you suppose the Democrats never get asked about their belief in God or evolution?

Because none of them have given any indication of wanting to bring religion into government?

Cut me a break. Find me a Democrat who has publicly challenged evolution. All the vocal anti-evolutionists are Republican.

Yes, that’s overbroad. Sue me.

I am trying to figure out why Ken and others are so very concerned that every presidential candidate makes a public confession of belief in evolution.

I guess you think the candidates are trying to write a textbook rather than communicate. Had you watched the debate, it was perfectly clear what he was saying, and he stated his belief system quite well.

I thought Huckabee did an excellent job last night, along with at least half of the candidates.

“Because none of them have given any indication of wanting to bring religion into government?”

That approach is so two days ago, Ken. Just yesterday Hillary was out there thanking God for getting her through Bill’s infidelities. The other Democrats are following suit on cue.

Why not ask the questions of them?

By the way, I don’t see anyone being a vocal anti-evolutionist until specifically asked by MS-NBC or CNN.

If examination of religious beliefs of Republicans is OK, why not Democrats?

I don’t much care about the issue either, I just ask that if the media is going to repeatedly get Republicans on the record on the issue that they do the same for Democrats.

I would really like to hear the answer to my question above. Why pray to and believe in God if you think he was just a bystander? I imagine there is a good answer to that question, I just don’t know what it would be.

I am trying to figure out why Ken and others are so very concerned that every presidential candidate makes a public confession of belief in evolution.

Wow, you know me so well. In fact, I am so very concerned that, when they are asked the question, they appear ignorant or evasive in their answers. I must say that any candidate who disavows evolution makes me skeptical of their grasp of science and its role in society. As Kenneth Miller so ably demonstrates, it is quite possible to be, simultaneously, a scientist, a devout Catholic, and a proponent of evolution.

I wouldn’t ask any of them the question. What I would ask is “Do you believe that so-called alternatives to evolution, such as creationism or intelligent design, should be included in public school science curricula?” I don’t care what their personal beliefs are; I care how those personal beliefs would color their policies.
