I know I know…I am supposed to stay in my zone…BUT, if after a 90 mile HARD effor bike ride on a hot day…am I supposed to shuffle for an hour or so to keep my heart rate at a particular zone? I feel okay running for a long time at 160ish (I maxed at about 209 this year so far). Or, should I shuffle on the “run” and keep it at 135ish for “proper” training?
I have roughly the same HR numbers as you. My buddy’s coach said I should keep my HR below at 145-150 during long runs and IM race.
Surely if you shuffle, that won’t be good quality will it? I don’t know much, but my gut tells me you should go off feel, and if it feels right, sod the HRM…
always a good thing if your heart is still beating!
This isnt a long run, more of an “easy” tranisition run after a long ride. I dont start to feel good at all till about mile 4 though…and it is quite hard on these “runs” to keep my heart rate below 160ish…though I feel fine.
Don’t forget after a long “warm up” like that and the heat, there will be some cardiac drift. You could probably go at least 10 beats higher and still be in the “recommended” training zone. Plus, if you’ve already done a hard effort, how does the heart know the difference between workouts? It’s not like you can build a run base while doing intervals on the bike.
Run on feel and either take the HRM off, or just look at it for data collection. I plan on running GFT sans HRM.
I was wondering why your heart rate on the run is high compared to your exertion. Is your heart rate on the bike OK at the end of the ride? Is there a possibility that you’re dehydrated? It’s normal for it to by highish when you start the run because of the transition, but does it drift lower towards the end as you get into it? Until you get some answers to these I’d go with perceived exertion.
I always race the run on PE…bike on the known rate…often taking the chest strap off for the run (and will again this year at GFT). My question is more for training…do I keep it low as Multipsports said I should (and I know Paul and Roc must know something)…and what is it y’all do.
