How's Your Metabolism?

Now that the season is upon us & I’m putting in big training hours, my body has officially gone into metabolic overdrive.

I was wondering where on the curve my metabolism fits in.

I am averaging 20 hours a week & about 7,000 Kcal/day.
I’m 6’ & 206lbs and I can’t go more than 60-90’ without my stomach grumbling.

I’m curious what you 30 hour guys throw down in a day?

I’m 29 and finding that my metabolism is only burning stronger. I’m up to two pints of Ben and Jerry’s now.

I am constantly eating at work. I just turned 28 and have been going 30+ hours a week (tapering right now) and it just sucks. I think I spend more time fixing food at my desk than working. At home I usually eat and then sleep, but I just hate to eat. I know it needs to be done, so I do my best.

It is more fun when you need pain killers for something. The doc never believes that the standard amount does nothing for you. I had a routecanal(sp??) the day before a race (on my lunchbreak) and the doc had to pump quite a bit of juice into my mouth.

Eat and eat. All I can say is, it costs a lot of money to eat.

I’ve found it’s just better to eat everything in sight. Don’t worry about how healthy it is for you, how many calories it has, what kind of gunk your insides will turn into…lol. As bad as that sounds, I’m 23 and my metabolism is in hyper-drive…so I really do eat just about anything put infront of me!

Youth is wasted on the young!!!

Wait until you get to my age, and then see what your metabolism is doing. Despite 15 to 20 hours a week, I still have to be aware of what I’m eating. I do find myself hungry, so I do lots of small meals and snacks.

My days of eating a pint of Ben & Jerry’s in one sitting are long gone. sigh Though I’m afraid if I tried, I’d probably toss my cookies and cream.

Rev Dr. Jay, how long does training 30+ hours a week take you? Or does 30+ hours include time to pool, shower, etc.? Or is it only time on task?

Just curious as to how you calculate training time relative to caloric intake…

Thx.

Funny story.

I decided that Sergio should try out the OTC carbo-loading protocol, which means eating 10g CHO per KG on the day before the race.

We tried it out before a local race. During that day he comes back to me and says “Paulo, I’ve done the math and planned the day’s meals, turns out it’s not much different from a normal day…”

And yeah, I also want to hear about the Reverend’s 30+ hours/week…

That does not include shower. I ride to work, run during lunch and after work it is usually a few hours on the bike, or running with some pool time.

I don’t shower at the pool, I run from the pool to my house. I only shower once a day. No showers at work :frowning:

I do not do the math as far as what I burn and what I eat. I eat when I need to and train when I am not working, sleeping or being daddy.

EDIT: My commute to work is one hour each way and my lunch break is spent running (except on Tues). So that is 14 hours without trying to train.
