MY wife & I would like to move internationally for a while, maybe Europe, but who knows. Would I just have to look at a domestic company’s job openings & see if they have anything overseas? Or can an American apply directly at a foreign-based company for a job over there? I clearly know absolutely nothing about this stuff.
What is it you do or would like to do?
You can apply for jobs directly but I suspect in the current climate that employers are going to be reluctant to fund a visa / work permit on your behalf. If on the other hand you can do something quite unique, such as juggle chain saws, obtaining such a visa becomes easier.
There are some options for working for shorter periods of time. I believe there are good books out there that provide advice on these topics, there were when I went to work in the US.
I am a chemist by degree & training, also have MBA. Many years of experience in the lab, managing folks, and in manufacturing.
Do you want to spend the time abroad “making a proper living” or having the experience?
I think it will be difficult as a foreigner to find work abroad in a lot of places, certainly europe at the moment is having local protectionism issues and I’m sure visas will become harder to come by.
I am interested in seeing how this works out for you. I am finishing up my PhD (biochem) and am interested in working overseas. I was thinking about a post-doc…maybe Sydney…
I hope this helps you:
