How to treat road rash

Today I got into an accident on the bike at the Rio Salado Triathlon. I got some serious road rash on my ankle, knee, elbow, back, and hands. I love the feeling of the burn as any of the rash touch fabric as I sit here attempting to go to bed. I was wondering what people thought were the best remedies for road rash other than neosporen. In addition in the accident my shifters were pushed towards the middle and I was wondering what people thought was the best solution to putting them back in place? Thanks for the advice. Talk to you all tomorrow, hopefully I have a good night sleep with this aching wrist!!! I love TRIATHLONS!!!

Does anyyone have an answer for road rash?

Saw this article last year and flagged it - a doctor discusses dealing with road rash including treatment and a nice list of supplies to have on hand.

I think Mr. Tibbs has some wrist strengthening exercises he could teach you.

Tegaderm - transparent dressing that provides an excellent wound healing environment. Its transparency makes monitoring the healing process easier - use it to protect minor wounds, cuts, scrapes, burns, or blisters: http://www.3m.com/us/home_leisure/nexcare/tegaderm.jhtml

I am dealing with my first case of road rash and I have researched a little on the subject. From what I gather keeping the wound moist apparently is the way to go to prevent scarring. (This is after the initial cleaning phase is done)

I purchased newskin patches which are for scrapes and burns and it seems to be doing a good job of preventing scarring.

Clean out the dirt. Then, put either vaseline, or (I think) better yet, Polysporin. Wash gently and reapply every few days, or when you get it wet. Or those gel dressings get very good reviews.

Letting it dry out and crust over actually prolongs healing.

PS. The neomycin in neosporin can cause reactions, with redness, etc. Polysporin is Neosporin without the neomycin.
