How to start out on rollers in an open area?

I am now quite comfortable on my rollers, I can ride in on handle bars and in aero position without falling off. But I am still stuck in the doorway because I need something to lean against to clip in and start out. Whats the trick to get rid of the doorway ?

take a portable chair and you can step up, put your hand on it to get going. or, just ride beside a table.

I always just set a sturdy chair fairly close to my rollers and lean against it as I get on. And then you have it there as a safety valve as well.

As the others have mentioned I would recommend using a chair or just have a wall to lean against. With time, and confidence, you can learn to clip in without using any other inantimate object.

The hardest part is balancing on your toes while one foot is clipped in and you sit in the saddle. Just start pedalling and when the wheels are going a bit you pause at the bottom of the pedal stroke to clip in with your other foot. Give it some time as if you don’t want to be forced to rely on a chair you can do it. Smaller drums or long legs make it easier as you are closer to the roller frame.

Baby steps first though and congrats on learning to ride rollers, some people don’t get that far.

i tried that, but am short.

is that something that even short people can do?

so sick of being a munchkin…i swear.

My better half built me a little plywood platform that sits over the rollers at what would be about ground level. Makes it MUCH easier to get on and off.

You might need a step stool or something like that if you can’t reach the roller frame when sitting on your saddle. But if you’re going to use a step stool you may as well use a chair. You could try sitting on the top tube when starting to pedal. Or try stradling the bike while clipped in with one foot with your other foot on the roller frame and try clipping in during a single pedal stroke. That method requires a full commitment and is a little more advanced than the saddle and tippy toe balance idea.

I’ll have to think about it and see if I can come up with a better solution.

Thanks for all the replies, I will try it with a chair, (the wall is not much different from the doorway and it has a phsychiological effect on me for some reason). This means that I gotta buy a chair as the only one that I have, has wheels under it :frowning:
Just another question, should I be able to ride on rollers with no hands ? I have always been intimidated to try!

*I can ride in on handle bars *

Heheh, when I first read that I though you said I can ride on handlebars and I was thinking DAMN, you are good.

I don’t think that there is any real benefit to being able to ride rollers no handed. It is a cool trick, shows that you have good balance and enables you to shed clothing if you started out wearing too much.

The way I learned to ride no handed was to try it in small steps. I would do it towards the middle or end of a workout by gently removing my hands and having them hover an inch or so above the bars in case I needed to quickly adjust the bars. Gradually I gained confidence and am able to ride no handed without much difficulty now.

Don’t ride no handed if you haven’t been on your rollers in a while though. A couple years ago it rained for the first time so I got my rollers out in my garage. After just a few minutes I decided to see if I could till ride no handed. Turns out that wasn’t the best idea as I ended up falling over in my garage just 5 minutes into that training session. Lesson learned: I’m an idiot and should have waited a couple of sessions before going no handed.

The ultimate roller trick is to be able to ride a fixie backwards on them after starting out riding forwards.

Also, how do you end up stopping if you’re worried about starting up on rollers? When you unclip is your bike at a pretty severe angle relative to the ground?

thanks now I got somthing fun to try

I’ve seen people ride a fixie backwards in person and on videos so I know that it can be done. Haven’t tried it myself though.

If you could do that no handed you would be really cool!

my wife has a good health insurance plan on me

sounds like fun stuff to do

them other trainers are for whimps ha ha

If you want to make if even funnier, try and shut your eyes.

Well, stopping hasn’t been too bad, I usually coast for a few seconds and then gently unclip, I can manage to reach the rollers frame with one leg before I totally lose the balance.
I also once put the front wheel on where the back wheel is supposed to be (between the two rollers) and the back wheel on the front roller just for the sake of it. It felt different but ridable. does riding like that have any benefit (or harm maybe) ?

That would be a new one for me too. I had a set of rollers in my apartment in college. After bar time my buddies would take turns trying to ride them. I would demonstrate no handed and then give them a shot at it.

I wouldn’t do that
my winter fat ass needs 2 rollers

I don’t think riding rollers with your rear wheel on the single drum would cause any problems. You wouldn’t develop quite as much balance/control that was as your front wheel would have more friction from the two drums and make it easier to steer straight. The rolling resistance of the rollers would change a bit too since the rear wheel would be on a single drum. Rollers create resistance by compressing the tires slightly which is why the smaller drums (DynoMytes) have more resistance than the larger drums (Challengers).

oh thanks Darell, you ARE the Roller Master!!
