Since craigslist has not found me a buyer, i’m thinking of listing my R3 on ebay. I"m curious for anyone who has sold a bike on ebay, how much would I expect to pay a bike shop to box and ship the bike?? ( I dont think I have enough mechanical skills or time to do it myself). Also do you know how much ebay collects off the sale of the bike?
eBay fees on bikes and bike parts is 10%, PayPal fee is 3%, bike shop fees to pack bike prob between $25-$50 depending on how friendly you are with them, UPS new shipping guidelines will be $100+, USPS was $65
Just sold a frame set and except for the bike shop fees, these were the expenses that were accrued. A bike shop may jut give you a bike box and you can pack it yourself.
Good luck.
Just sold my bike via eBay, packed her up and shipped it yesterday. It was relatively painless and much easier than selling in person (IMO) and I think I got a better price for it.
eBay fee wasn’t much but paypal takes 3%. LBS packed it for $50 but I’m pretty sure I got ripped off. Could’ve done a much better job myself.
Most unexpected thing for me was the shipping cost. From NY to CA turned out to be ~$120, plus the insurance for the value of the bike it came out to be $150. I only charged $110 for S&H.
If you wanna see my listing, it should still be available for a few days:

great info, thanks
.
Have you tried posting it here too?
i have…its posted now…i was sure someone would grab it…but so far no luck
.

I stand corrected. Just got my eBay bill today. It turns out, eBay listing fee wasn’t much but they charge 10% transaction fee. I feel soo stupid right now… take that into consideration when selling your bike… you might wanna work out a off-eBay deal with someone viewing your listing via Paypal. Same protection, no eBay transaction fee.

eBay has gotten super overprotective with this type of activity. They’ll delete any email or website address from the content of your correspondence from a potential buyer. I think you can get away with phone numbers, but who knows, maybe that will change too.

Just a tip: pictures sell your bike. On the classifieds or on eBay, very few people will buy without pictures. The better a camera, lighting, staging, etc you can use, the more people fall in love with it. It’s because buying a bike isn’t a RATIONAL decision for most people - it’s an obsessive or spur-of-the-moment decision. I spent a month building a bike because I saw a gorgeous picture online and I wanted one exactly like it.
That said, Slowtwitch is a great resource. eBay is ridiculously expensive, after everything’s said and done. It can be upwards of 16-17% of the cost of the listing (10% for ebay, 3% for paypal, which is owned by ebay, and shipping is another 5% on a $2,000 bike).
I’ve sold two bikes on Ebay but the fees have gotten really high. I probably will look for a local buyer the next time I go to sell. My LBS charged me $35 to partially disassemble the bike and box it up for shipping. They removed the front wheel, handlebars, rear derailleur and seatpost. They also added bubble wrap and some paper stuffing. Call around to see what bike shops charge, it can vary greatly. I then picked it up and took it over to the UPS hub. Don’t go to a UPS store as their charges can be higher. Don’t seal up your box until you get there as they may want to see what you’re shipping. I had to open mine. Maybe it was for insurance purposes, not sure. Get the box insured so you are protected against damage or loss. You could even box it up and get a shipping quote before you list it so you have an idea what it will cost. I was charged $75 to $85 shipping with insurance to ship from Florida to North Carolina and Florida to Iowa.
more good stuff…thanks, gotta work on my pictures
.
Agree on the pics. If they weren’t good, take better ones and try Craigslist again. I won’t even look at something that doesn’t have a good image .
Good advice given, especially concerning shipping costs and photos. You also have to decide auction or fixed price. If you choose fixed, BIN, look at completed listings for similar bikes to get a realistic idea of it’s value.
i think part of the problem is that I live in NH and about 5 people look at the bikes…
