I am farsighted and need no significant correction for distance, but can’t see the small numbers on my Polar CS100 bike computer and definitely not the heart rate on my Garmin 305 Forerunner?
What do ya’ll do? Where reading glasses? Wear bifocal glasses? Do they make prescription bifocal sport glasses and sunglasses (I often work out at night).
Have you changed the display settings on the 305? You can choose how many items are on each screen and their location. I know by default, the HR on the 305 is about a size 4 font and completely unreadable while moving.
The Garmin Edge 604 and 705 both have a similar feature where you can choose the number of items on each screen. Granted this will cost you some decent $$$ to purchase instead of using your Polar.

Change the setting on your 305, and use it on the bike also.
Apart from changing the font size on your computer, there are lots of Rx-able sunglass options from Oakley, Rudy, Nike , Adidas and more, most have bifocal or mulitfocal lens designs available. Lots of options for CL’s as well. Bifocal CL’s (fit on one eye, typically your nondominant eye for near…or on both eyes) work well for many people. Their is even a one day disposable bifocal which Ive fit on lots of athletes. One days are great for occasional or part time wear. If fit right, these shouldnt cause alot of distance blur at all. “Monovision” CLs (one eye fit for distance and the other for near, or just fitting the near eye only) may also be an option, but you can expect some reduction in distance vision, and depth perception with this modality, and I wouldnt recommend this for cycling, etc.

I can change the settings to display 1, 2, 3, or 4 data, but heart rate is not in one of the main boxes, but is microscopic in the upper right hand corner. How do I enlarge the heart rate display? I am currently using 3 data values, elapsed time (top), pace (lower left) and distance (lower right).
I wore progressive sunglasses for years but after years of not being able to see at all when swimming and not being able to really see my bike computer I finally went with bifocal contact lenses. The only time I have trouble is when trying to read a menu at night in low light otherwise the contacts are great.
No, Bifocals are different then lenses for astigmatism…but if you have significant astigmatism, their are no good bifocal lens options for you…all the bifocal lenses dont correct for astigmatism. If you have .75 or 1.00 diopters of astigmatism , or more, you probably wont see real well with bifocal contacts.
Now, to be thorough, their are Rigid gas permeable bifocal CL’s , that will simultaneously correct for higher amounts of astigmatism. Soft lens designs and rigid gas permeable lens designs are different ( and so is the intial comfort …:):)…) but thats a different discussion altogether.
Carter,
I don’t remember what happened the first time I setup the 305, but I just reviewed mine now and “Heart Rate”, “Heart Rate - Lap”, etc. all appear as options when I go to change the data fields.
Settings >> General >> Data Fields >> Main 1 (or any of the others)
Good Morning 3wayguy
The Polar RS200,RS400 and RS800 all have a ZOOM feature. You Polar unit will adjust the display from three rows of information to two. One row is very large, basically the size of two rows combined. None of our cycling units(CS) have this feature, just a little FYI. Hope this helps
