How to recover and prevent getting shin pain after running?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been running consistently for about 6 months and recently increased my weekly mileage from 25km to about 40km. Over the past two weeks, I started experiencing shin pain during and after running. I tried resting for a few days but the discomfort returned every time I ran again.

Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Have you found any effective ways to recover and prevent it from happening again?

First go see a doc to get some imaging (or at least an exam) done to rule out a stress fracture. It may very well take more than a few days off for you to recover from this.

As @mistressk says, you might want to get a look at it

Where in the shin is this pain, and how would you describe it?

If it’s a dull ache on the inside of your shin, that could be a stress fracture, sure

If it’s more of a sharp, burning pain, that runs up & down the outside of your shin, that would probably indicate a chronic shin splint - is it overly hilly where you’re running, perhaps?

Just a couple of guesses, as I’ve had both in my years
