How to get turn by turn directions on Garmin 910XT (New version of Garmin Connect)

I previously owned a Garmin 310XT and used this method to create turn by turn directions:

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=4244995

I recently upgraded to a Garmin 910XT and this method no longer works. I googled various methods using Ride with GPS and BikeRouteToaster and the tutorials for each of the methods I have found have been a couple years old and don’t seem to work anymore.

Does anyone have current and working methods to get turn by turn directions on my Garmin 910XT? I really like Strava route creator and have created a couple routes and converted those to both .tcx and .gpx files. I can’t seem to get those onto my garmin connect. I have clicked the plan tab → courses → create course → upload → manual upload. Once I upload my created .tcx or .gpx file I get this message “An error occurred with your upload. Please try again.”

What can I do differently to get created courses on my device? I would LOVE turn by turn, but any rideable course would be great!
Thanks!

See here, this might work for you.

I general, I use the 910 in the swim and run, but my 810 on the bike.

Keep in mind, even if you get the breadcrumb course to display, you won’t get turn by turn or street maps rendering the 910 almost useless for nav.

Love this tool that creates a cue sheet that you can upload to 910xt from Training Center starting with a Google Map:

.

Here you go. Load them manually unfortunately you may never get Garmin to look at this too low on the priority.

910xt (Window)
Click the Windows Start menu / Windows Logo iconType %appdata% into the Run boxClick OKOpen Garmin directoryOpen Devices directoryOpen the Unit ID (should be 10 numbers) directoryOpen NewFilesCopy your .fit file(s) or .tcx file(s) into the NewFiles directoryMake sure ANT Agent or Garmin Express transfers data to the 910xt (watch transfer screen for progress)After transfer is complete, you should see your new Power Target Based course(s) on the 910xt by going to Training then Courses

910xt (Mac)
Open FinderClick Go from the Menu barPress and hold the Option key on the keyboardClick LibraryOpen Applications SupportOpen Garmin directoryOpen Devices directoryOpen the Unit ID (should be 10 numbers) directoryOpen NewFilesCopy your .fit file(s) or .tcx file(s) into the NewFiles directoryMake sure ANT Agent or Garmin Express transfers data to the 910xt (watch transfer screen for progress)After transfer is complete, you should see your new Power Target Based course(s) on the 910xt by going to Training then Courses

Whoops ignore the power based target courses I pulled this off our support page for you it will be courses with navigation cue sheets.

MrCooper, I tried you method… no luck.

I have also tried the above listed goodlcuesheet method. Worked AMAZING on my 310XT. I was able to use it on a 160 mile unknown route with complete success. It for some reason is not loading on my 910XT.

Any other options?

I tried garmin connect route creator… Holy hell bad. I was able to get routes on my device, but it was so buggy that I couldn’t use it. It would no tell me to ever turn. If I switched to the mode with the compass, I could sort of see which direction to go, but it was SUPER slow to change directions when I needed to turn so I missed every turn.

Are you using garmin express or ant agent to transfer data? I have heard that you may want to go back to ant agent. I just did this with my 910xt and a ridewithgps file yesterday for turn by turn nav. There may be a setting on garmin express that auto sends to garmin connect I would turn that off (if it exists) as well.

I’m still using ant agent. It appears there may be files that want to transfer but are not going over. My little ant agent icon (top corner of my macbook) has a small envelop, which I have never seen before. When I open up my ant agent, I see a larger image of an envelop that says “Detected new data to send to device”

The problem is, it won’t send to my device. I have it on, near my mac. I send training files over daily without problems.

I’ll try to send a new one over in a bit and make sure I write down anything odd. Very strange indeed.

So I just tried putting a .fit and a .tcx course in the NewFiles directory and using Garmin Express (not connected to Garmin Connect) and they both went through. I had the watch on already and sitting next to the computer and garmin express up and running already before I transferred files over. Hope that works for you.

I downloaded Garmin Express and tried your method again. I could tell that it tried to send, but kept giving me an error message. Damn.

For me, the problem is not necessarily sending the files to my device, it is where can I create them with turn by turn directions and actually have them work on the 910XT.

How do I get to the Run box on Windows 8?

Thanks

In 8… (iirc)… from metro screen (with all the tiles) type run
This will pop up the search results and you should see run in the list

(You can also tight click it and set as a tile etc)

In 8.1 you can right click the Windows icon from the desktop

I’m not near a pc at moment but think I remember correctly
