When counting grams of carbohydrate (I’m interested to see how many I ingest each day), do you count the sugars found in whole fruits and veggies, or just found in your more ‘manufactured’ sources (pasta, bread, juice)? Seems like an obvious yes to me, but I know that the presence of fibre in fruit means that your body processes the carbs in an apple, for example, differently than if you just took an equivalent amount of fructose syrup.
The latest rule of thumb is to subtract the fiber from the carb count ONLY if the fiber is > 5 grams.
So, if something has 40g of carbs and 20g of fiber, the net carbs is 25g.
Note: you subtract anything over 5g, so that’s why I got 25g instead of 20g.
I’m a Type 1 Diabetic… I count carbs… a LOT. There are some tortilla shells out there with like 30g of carbs and 20g of fiber. If I don’t take the fiber into account, I’m in trouble.
Type 1 is the type that typically stays in ketosis? If so I hear what you’re saying. Having utilized ckd for weightloss I never really paid attention to net carbs and stayed at about 20g a day in order to stay in ketosis.

NO!
Type 1 (I also have it) is autoimmune. Something triggers your immune system to attack and destroy the beta cells in your pancreas and it can no longer produce insulin. We’re only in ketosis if we have uncontrolled blood glucose levels! There is a HUGE difference between dietary ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis.
I think there are diet-based programs (like Calorie-count.com) that do the work for you. If I really was going to count calories/ carbs/ anything, I’d find one of those that works for me and use it religiously.

This. I like “Tap and Track” on the iPhone. Been using it for a while. It’s helped me lose 35 pounds and it’s been a trusty tool when fine tuning my tri nutrition.
