How to commit political suicide FL style

How do you not get up there and debate? Over a fan?

Flip Side:

How do you knowingly break the rules? And then smirk about it like a weasel?

Nearly all major political debates have this gamesmanship and it’s really, REALLY childish.

Case in point: As an engineering student at U of Miami during the 2004 presidential debate (Bush v. Kerry), we were in charge of helping set up all of the IT hardware in the “green room” where both parties shared a large, split room - modems, TVs, speakers, etc. Throughout the day and even DURING the debate, Republicans were measuring the room size to verify their side was the same sqft as the democrats. Meanwhile, the democrats were counting TVs to verify they had an equal number of TVs as the Repubs. Repubs countered by stating the podiums were not equal-distance from the center of the room (we had already laser measured them). Also, both sides requested that we move the “stage sound system” to another room because they didn’t trust the other party to not touch it during the debate. It was like watching a bunch of 5 year olds fight over a swing set.

FYI - The rule is about “no electronics”, not specifically about a fan. Rick Scott’s side knew that Charlie Crist has always used a fan during debates, which he learned from Jeb Bush. They then tried to stretch that rule to mess with Crist.

They fucking changed the rules on these debates. Before it used to be if you polled at 10% on a widely accepted poll. My friend Adrian has been polling in the low double digits and they changed the rule to 15. It once was 7. I hate both of them, and if Florida elects a POS like Crist, well, I’m glad I don’t live there anymore.

What is really sad is that these things are never debates. A debate, properly speaking, is where people take clear aim on an issue and are prepared to answer and ask questions of each other about their opposing stance.

The rule is about “no electronics”, not specifically about a fan.

Hmmmm. A fan is an electric device but I don’t believe it is electronic.

So who is politically dead after this fiasco? The cheater or the crybaby?

Yes!

Technically, Florida voters, who on average, have a remaining shelf life of about 3.5 episodes of Matlock.

Florida voters should have had their right to vote revoked after 2000 anyway.

I’m guessing it will hurt the crybaby.

Calling Crist a cheater doesn’t help. Was the purpose of the rule to prevent fans??? No, it was to prevent tablets, computers, etc. Scott chose to make the public wait over the issue. That was his choice. He could have just ignored it and go on. That reflects on his leadership and judgment.

Florida voters should have had their right to vote revoked after 2000 anyway.

Right. Because approximately half voted for the wrong guy. The other half voted for another wrong guy.

Meh, I don’t really care about who the candidates were. Larry, Moe and Curly could’ve been running for all I care. It was more about their ability to screw up an election.

Florida voters should have had their right to vote revoked after 2000 anyway.

If voting actually mattered, then the ruling class certainly would have found a way to eliminate it by now. As it stands, voting does exactly what it’s designed to do.

What’s the dividing line? Even dictionary definitions are vague. If you want to restrict it to things with integrated circuits, or simply more advanced than simple analog systems, you’d have to open up the fan! Is the speed switch a variable resistor or IC controller? Power conditioner?

Nonetheless, childish antics on all sides.

There’s a way around that:

Really? You don’t actually know the difference between something powered by an electric motor and an electronic device? Wow! Apparently Rick Scott doesn’t either.

If he wanted to take issue with something, why not the way they introduced Charlie Christ as “Governor Charlie Christ”. Shouldn’t that be “Former Governor Charlie Christ”?

BTW, they referred to Rick Scott as “the incumbent Governor” or “Governor Rick Scott”.

you’d have to open up the fan!

Putting THAT on television would have been entertaining
