I have my ZIPP 404’s which I want to glue using Mastik One Vittoria glue - I am placing Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tyres on them and I want to use the glue.
The tyres previously on them had Tufo extreme tape holding them on…
…got most of it off but some still left…what should I use to get the rim spotless for the glue, as the rims are carbon…or should I just use the Tufo Extreme tape which I also have and sod the glue???
I would use a product called Goo Gone or its Gibraltar equivelent. It is meant to remove residue from stickers and other sticky residue. In addition to this, I would get three rags and a soft toothbrush. Apply Goo Gone to the toothbrush and scrub the glue in a small section until it becomes more liquid. Take one rag and wipe off this newly-viscous compound. Continue this proccess, continually reapplying Goo Gone to the toothbrush, until all glue residue is removed. (Be warned, this might take a little while.) The rim might still feel a bit sticky. Take the remaining rag and add liberal dose of Goo Gone to it. Wipe down the rim until all sticky parts are gone and until it merely feels a little slippery from the Goo Gone. Finally, clean the rim with soap and water and the remaining cloth until it is free from all Goo Gone and dry. It will then be spotlessly clean.
I use goo gone to remove regular tubular glue…just make sure that you are outside or in a well ventilated area…the stuff will kill brain cells fast. I usually use acetone to remove the residue left behind by the goo gone.
Use the glue…Vittoria makes the best tubular glue, hands down. It has much more holding power than the tufo tape. It takes a little longer to use the glue, but if done right, the tire will stay where it is supposed to, and it is not that hard to remove.
Not sure if you read the post last week called ‘tape vs. glue’ but it had this link in it which turned out to be a VERY valuable resource as far as gluing up your carbon wheels. Check out this website!
