Anyone have good ideas on how to carry endurolytes or other salt tabs during a race? The zip lock bag seems to work for me on the run but is a pain on the bike. Any tips?
I tape a plastic 35mm film canister on the back of my handlebar water bottle.
Mini M&M cannister with a little cotton in the bottom.
Film canister worked in training. Switched to a life saver container for a race and got f*cked when it opened in my jersey and they all got soaked…
So, yeah, film canister gets my vote.
Here’s a tip: E-Gel, 240 mg of sodium and additional electrolytes per serving of 1.9 ounce (NOT a pittly 1.4 or 1.5 ounce) gel container.
When you use E-Gel, you don;t have to carry or swallow capsules. The Electrolytes you need are in the Gel, where they belong.
A Tic Tac container has always worked well for me.
I crack them open and pour them into my water bottles before a ride.
I use the little zip-lock baggy that Hammer sells. I tape it to my top tube and put it in my top once I get riding - thus, no saturated Endurolytes.
E-Gel is fine – if one can stomach the massive serving (56mg?). This is just way too much for me.
Hammer sent me a bunch of those little oval rubber coin purses with a slit on one side, you know the ones that you squeeze and they open like lips. They are awesome, you’d think the caplets would get all sweaty but they don’t. do not swim this this though. Just squeeze, stick your tongue in a few stick tongue. You can also just pour a few into your hand or mouth as well. Works well but if you need 20 caplets you’ll need something bigger.
E-Z DOSE, the company that makes those “per day” pill boxes, also makes pill zip-lock bags. I paid $2 for 50 at WalMart. They work great, plus you can swim in them. Double bag if you are worried. They are much less obtrusive than a film canister or M&M mini container…
On my last race I used the “coin holders” that Hammer sells for its E-caps. It worked pretty good.
Fuel Belt sells this little velcro closure pouch that is supposed to be used on their belts…but it works just fine on my race number belt…I just slip in that little “coin purse thingy” that you can get from E-caps for like .75 and off I go…slowly of course!
I don’t remeber the exact model but it’s like 3"x3" or so…

a friend taught me this (thanks scott of chicago)…
Wrap a sheet of plastic wrap on the top tube, place the salt tabs two by two (There might be a little balancing act involved here) and wrap another sheet of plastic wrap.
#1 Its very very very light weight #2 They are there when you need them. #3 Plastic keeps 'em dry #4 you can immediately tell how many you have taken at a glance.
They just simply pop right out with your index finger and thumb. I did this at Ralph’s last year. Worked like a charm.
I now do it on my long bike rides.
How about getting some InfinIT drink - all the carbs, protein, caffeine, salt, whatever you want right in your water bottle? I really like the Saran wrap idea on the top tube though - how cool is that! I used to hate fumbling for the salt tabs/endurolyte. Now, the InfinIT handles it all just fine, thanks.
