IF you all get a chance, watch the Bob Costas show this week on HBO. It was incredable…We have all heard about the Balco thing, but what I didn’t know, was about the guy that actually invented the clear. He is an ex bodybuilder/chemist savant that has been around doping for a long time. He was the guy that invented the Andro that McGuire was heavily into. Apparently Victor Conti called him and asked him about the andro, and he told him he has something 10 times better, and totally undetectable. They bought it from him, and tested it. It was one of the most powerfull steroids out there, and when tested, was totally invisable… this guy put together a doping program for a lot of athletes, Bonds, Tim Montgomery, Sheffield, Marion Jones, and dozens and dozens of others…
Balco was on the leading edge with this guy, and money was no object, since all the clients were athlete mega millionaires… If not for a disgruntled employee who sent a vial of the clear to WADA, it might still be in use. THey interviewed Caitlan, the anti drug king, and he said that this guy is a genius, and it took him 3 months after getting the substance, to devise a test for it…WHen asked what he thought about Bonds and Sheffield, he just laughed, and felt no guilt, since there was not drug policy against steroids in baseball at the time. He said he started feeling bad after TIm broke the world record in the 100m dash though. He made a comment like this guy shouldn’t get this record, because he is not the fastest, and because it wasn’t a level playing field(like base ball apparently), and it was against the rules of track and field…
HE served some time for this stuff, but is out now and making legal supplements that push the limits…It was kind of funny to see this ex bodybuilder, quite young too, spilling all the beans…If you had any doubt about Bonds, this pretty much clears it up…He laught when asked if they knew what they were taking, of course they did…I wonder if any cyclists were part of that scandal, I don’t remember hearing any?
He argued that those drugs don’t exist and that doctors can and will not acquire, distribute and apply those chemicals.
I think that medical profession in general has a problem at their hands that they are (as of yet) unwilling to deal with.
And yes, it starts with the general prescription of Testo.

Being picky it was Trevor Francis, (M Jones, T Mongomery and many others) ex coach who sent the vial to WADA. THe excuse that many have given that were caught who said that they used stuff from a freind or team mate without knowing what it was is laughable. You make millions of dolars off of you athletic performance and your willing to swig a potion, run anointment and inject something that the guy next to you in a lockerroom says is great?

Even without drug testing and the worry of getting caught, I can’t imagine swallowing some unknown pill.

You are right, it is laughable. And the thing is, that as soon as all these athletes stated on the program, they instantly got better at their respective sports. How hard would it be to give it up after that??? WOrld records, all time records, fame, more fortune, glory… Pretty tough for the average athlete to walk away from that little deal with the devil…Look at the timing of Bonds starting the program in his late 30’s… He starts a chain of years that beat every other year he ever had, or anyone else in history for that matter…Never mind the obvious physical changes…The chemist stated that it also helped hitters spot the ball better too, something about better eyesight and coordination…
I guess Lance had more money to make positive tests go away…

Tim and MJ’s coach was Trevor Graham…you just combined his name with the other scumbag coach, Charile Francis of Ben Johnson fame who later became MJ and Tim’s coach for about 3 months.
I forget how Graham got the clear, but the story goes that he was upset that Balco’s athletes were beating his athletes. In order to save his athletes, he turned the vial over to USADA. Him outing Balco was the best thing he ever did because it led to the demise of Tim, MJ and himself, as well as the other half-dozen athletes who tested positive while he was coaching them. The irony…
Your right. When I was a kid Detroit had a pro soccer team. At one point they imported a star from England named Trevor Francis. Somehow that name seemed pretty familiar.
I’m not sure, probably have to check the website. His shows are usually on all week though, at all different times… I’m going to watch it again, it was a great segment, along with a great little league story from the 50’s…
