How to assess a carbon frame for damage?

As I wrote in my IMC race report, my 2007 QR Lucero t-boned a car that cut me off. Neither of us was going very fast (I’d guess 8-10 mph). My Zipp 808 front wheel is buckled and twisted in several places so it’s obviously a total loss. As fas as assessing any damage to the fork and frame, what do I look for? cracks in the clearcoat? can there be damage that isn’t visible? If so, how would this be detected?

Thanks,
Chris

If in doubt, don’t take chances. Carbon frames can also apparently fail from the inside out, so you may not be visually able to detect flaws.

Calfee has a frame inspection and repair service. http://www.calfeedesign.com/howtosendrepair.htm
