This ^^^^^^
It makes me laugh because I have seen this…or the dude wearing an N95 turning purple while running because he can’t breath. Makes no sense.
Keep in mind that others wearing cloth masks are doing it for YOUR sake, not theirs.
The effort is to reduce the distance that respiratory droplets spread toward others, not to prevent the inhalation of respiratory droplets by the user.

It depends heavily on how your are riding and your experience level.
If you’re a typical nonracing casual low-speed cycling person such as the tons of folks that bike commute everywhere in Copenhagen, helmets aren’t required. They certainly aren’t saving tons of lives there even if you do use them and it does no public service to force people to wear them there and in many parts of Europe.
If you’re the average Slowtwitcher with FTP of 350 watts at 140 lbs on a typical 24mph training ride (LOL) you should be wearing a helmet for sure.
But also, if you’re the typical American nonathlete who only gets on a bike <5x per year, you should wear a helmet even if you’re going slow - lack of experience increases fall risk.
Would you rather be in closed in room with a diesel truck that does a soot cloud or outdoors? The dissipation of things outdoors is just infinitely better.
Also, I run and ride away from greenways and busy areas. Greenways are packed here.
I want to go back to the opened up gravel riding in the state park but just know there’ll be lots of people out and about.

…
While that may be the end result, I guarantee you 99.99999% of the people wearing face masks are doing it because they (wrongly) feel it is protecting them, not because they are worried about others.

I am around 6 lbs too fat for that, and sadly 120W off…there was a time that I was only 70W off that mythical STer (sucks to get old). I THINK the only STer I know of anywhere close to 350W FTP at 140lbs would Francois Modave. I think at one point he was around 320-something Watts at just under 140lbs.

I am not so sure here… most of people I know understand why they are wearing masks. Judging by how cautious people are in the “reopened” states, I think you may be underestimating people.
I’m not sure if I would put the percentage quite that high, but I would definitely agree that most of the people wearing them think that they are doing it for themselves. There also might be a bit of avoidance of social shaming mixed into it too.

Ding ding ding! They might say it’s for others but you can tell by the way people instinctively act and how quick they were to horde that it’s more for their own safety than others. There are definitely some who are doing it more for others although if it is really spreading that much outdoors in the great wide open I think we can all agree that we would have far bigger problems on our hands.

The automobile that hits a cyclist, doesn’t care about skill or speed.
